Last I read, they didn't have a candidate for each contested seat; IOW, even though they were at that time polling ahead of other parties, it would be at best a symbolic victory. But I guess the idea is the important thing. :^)

Thanks for explaining how the Irish parties would fit with their approximate American equivalents. That makes it easier to follow. Too bad like so many countries it’s just different flavors of socialism.

Ireland may go through a rough patch as we did with Obummer.

Sometimes, that is needed for people to come to their senses.

Not too long ago, I was feeling good about Ireland. They were producing, successful, thoughtful people and were doing well.

WTH happened. Seems like I turned my eyes for one minute and everything fell apart.

Their Dutch, or whatever, Prime Minister, is totally unimpressive.

How did Ireland go from one of the most conservative and religious countries in Europe to a leftist cesspool?

"Actually they’re Catholics.

Sinn Fein was never "Catholic," but it was the party of choice for Catholics for many years. Since they have recently embraced abortion and same-sex marriage, they are now being disavowed by orthodox practicing Catholics-- which are becoming rarer in Ireland, apparently.

More socialist than the socialists they are replacing.

If you hear “right” or “center-right” in European politics, think Steyer or Bloomberg type dems... Liberal in public speech and actions, profit driven tyrant wannabes in practice.

Ireland is and has been a very conformist country. A half-century ago, Ireland conformed to Catholicism. Now it conforms to secular liberalism. The conformity continued. The subject matter of the conformity changed. Why is leftism so appealing to them? Part of it has to do with a sort of national inferiority complex. They’re ashamed of their past as this sort of backward, more-Catholic-than-pope place and are doing their darnedest to embrace “modernity.” In neighboring Britain, conservatism is sort of tied up with a sort of Eton-associated upper class that has no analog in Ireland. To some extent, television and Irish-Catholic Democrats in the U.S. like the deplorable Kennedy family probably also played a role in influencing the old country in embracing liberalism.

>> Actually they’re Catholics. <<

Only on paper. No "Catholic" political party would support abortion and gay marriage.

Apparently the priest that got excommunicated by "Frankie the Pope" for presiding over a gay wedding missed that memo.

And a more recent example:

Not good. Ireland has a very ridiculous electoral system. I heard SF didn’t run a full slate of candidates and might have done even better if they did.

A shitteload of independents seem to hold the balance of power between IRA, Labour and a couple smaller leftists parties and our lovely Squishy Centrists that are opposed despite having the same policies FF and FG.

I don’t think the IRA will form the government unless FF decides to break their campaign promise and join with them

A new conservative party appears to have won a single seat.

I may have spoken too soon on the new conservative party. Aontú.

They seem to actually be a pro-life breakaway from SF, left wing on economics and immigration.

Renua, which actually is a conservative party, is currently leaderless, ran only 11 candidates and got 0.3% of the vote.

Seems like most viable option on the “right” was the incumbent homo EU lover of Fine Gael.

Ireland sucks.
