Sen. Bernie Sanders called for an end to cash bail across the country at the Democratic debate on Friday night, saying there are hundreds of thousands of people locked up because they cant afford a several-hundred-dollar fee.
Sanders made his call to end bail as the candidates debated Americas criminal justice system and how it affects minorities in the United States.
Most people dont know this. Tonight in America, 200,000 people are in jail without having been convicted of anything. Two hundred thousand people because they cant afford the 500 bucks they need to get out of jail, Sanders said.
That is outrageous. We are going to end cash bail in America, he added.
Sanders comments came as New York state passed a criminal justice law that went into effect on Jan. 1, ending bail for a number of misdemeanor and non-violent felony offenses.
The law has been blasted by law enforcement officials and elected officials in the city, with NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea saying in January that a rise in citywide crime since the start of 2020 is linked to the bail-reform law.
In the first three weeks of this year, were seeing significant spikes in crime. So either we forgot how to police New York City, or theres a correlation, Shea said.

I support the end of bail for misdemeanors and non violent felonies.
Bail reform is supposed to get people to appear in court on their own cognizance.
Dont know why any one would support letting people accused of violent felonies out with or without bail.
So the crazy old marxist wants criminals let out of jail before the trial, as long as they promise to be good boys and show up for the court date.
Or does he want all accused criminals to stay in jail, even if they can afford bail?
Foremost in the mind of a crazy marxist is what they call “fairness.” The amount of money you have should not determine if you are confined to a jail cell.
Insane liberal attitudes like this have released criminals on the streets to kill again. That’s what he wants.
Can they use that credit card they stole to pay the bail?
Why don’t we just get rid of all laws and law enforcement period? Wouldn’t that be great?

Wouldnt it make more sense to just have Bloomberg put up all bail monies? After all, Bernie says that billionaires need to contribute more.
People who commit serious crimes should stay locked up awaiting trial.
Bail reform does away with incarceration for everyone else.
At least thats the way its supposed to work.
> So the crazy old marxist wants criminals let out of jail before the trial <
Socialists love chaos, at first. Its one way for them to gain power. Then after they gain power, they ruthlessly suppress the chaos. The National Socialists (Nazis) perfected that technique.
It is called “body attachment”.
With no skin in the game, there is little incentive for the miscreant to voluntarily return to court appearance if merely turned loose. There is nothing to lose by simply disappearing, no obligation, no appeal to conscience.
“Catch and release” brought down to the precinct level.
> I think justice would be promoted far more by politicians insisting that the Sixth Amendment right to a speedy trial be enforced. <
Excellent comment!
The Supreme Court has perverted the 6th Amendment. A speedy trial now means within six months. How is that speedy? And whats worse, all criminal prosecutions now means only those crimes carrying a sentence of more than six months.
All evidently no longer means all.
So if you are charged with such a crime, you can sit in jail for six months. And you DONT have the right to request a jury trial.
The 6th Amendment:
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed...
they are NOT criminals unless and until they’ve been convicted of a crime
(i have seen far far FAR too much raw abuse of the police..... and judicial.... systems to assume anybody arrested is guilty of anything
I would give them a pass the first time for minor crimes, especially if they are not repeat offenders, but if they continue to shoplift or whatever while awaiting trial then they need to be locked up.
But I think a better approach would be to end the war on drugs, do something about asset forfeiture, and crack down on plea deals. There are too many people pleading to stuff they didn’t do because prosecutors, scared them into it. Also, do something about roadside drug testing. When doughnut frosting tests positive for meth, they should not be accepted for any reason. Either ban them or let victims sue the test makers and police for the consequences of a false positive.
Sen. Bernie Sanders called for an end to cash bail .
I agree !!! ALL democrat politicians should be arrested and no bail should be offered of any kind. After a fair trial they should be hanged until dead.
I am probably wrong here, but isn’t bail something that is pretty much a state and local matter. Would Congress even have the power to eliminate bail for state crimes?
So I’m going to assume that Sanders is advocating no bail for Federal crimesis that it?
With all the serious issues this country faces and this marxist is talking about bail?
“i have seen far far FAR too much raw abuse of the police..... and judicial.... systems to assume”
It is sad to say, but at some point the “justice” system went from being about justice to being about winning. They are no longer focused on figuring out who actually did what, and instead all they want to know is “can I get a conviction?”. I my mind, there is a HUGE difference.
That said, this move by Sanders is not about fairness, but is simply a response to PDJT commuting sentences for non-violent offenders. Their polling must be telling how popular this is among certain groups.
In NYC all it has done is release thieves and vandals and drug dealers to keep breaking the law. This actually encourages lawless behavior and is the opposite of Rudy’s broken window policy that cleaned up NYC.
