SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore on Friday raised its coronavirus alert level and reported more cases not linked to previous infections or travel to China, a move that sparked panic-buying of essentials in some shops across the island.
As Singapores infected tally hit 33, the alert level was raised to orange - a level reached during the 2003 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome outbreak and the 2009 H1N1 influenza which indicates the virus is severe and passes easily between persons.
With the disease reviving memories of SARS which killed more than 30 people in Singapore and hundreds worldwide, shoppers started clearing shelves of toilet paper, noodles and rice, and formed long queues in supermarkets across the island on Friday evening, videos posted on social media showed.
I understand that people are concerned after the announcement this afternoon. However, we must...not hoard items unnecessarily. This will create undue panic and is unhelpful to the situation at hand, trade minister Chan Chun Sing said in a Facebook post about the panic buying.
Singapores highest alert level is red, which indicates the virus is spreading widely and can result in major disruption such as closing schools.
As there are now a few local cases without any links to previous cases or travel history to China, we have stepped up our risk assessment, the health ministry said announcing the new orange alert level on Friday.
It also said firms should be prepared for widespread community transmission and advised that non-essential large-scale events should be deferred or cancelled...

But, but, but......flu.
I sure love Trump, but he is getting some really, really, BAD advice on this (likely intentional, to some extent).
Is it me, or do people around the world seem to be on a knife’s edge in terms of panic? It just seems that people are easily pushed into panic mode. I understand that the coronavirus could be serious to some degree, but man panic buying at this point already? Why?
“I understand that the coronavirus could be serious to some degree, but man panic buying at this point already? Why?”
Supply lines are already being cut out of China. By the time the effects flow down (shortages, outages, increased prices, rationing, and long lines), it will be too late.
So why not push forward purchases that you would have made anyway?
“panic buying at this point already? Why?”
Because when “why?” is obvious, buying is too late.
Johns Hopkins has reall bad news regarding Corona virus. Of the 31,500 infected, 1,700 have recovered.
Infectious Disease/Corona/Prepper ping.
I am still helping TIK for a few days while he’s not internet available.
If you want to be added/dropped from the ping list, please private message me so I don’t miss any pings.
“panic buying at this point already?”
What point do you think it is?
SARS infected 8,098 in 8 months.
CV infected 31,500 in 2 MONTHS.
It's just like a common cold! No worse than a mild flu!Colloidal silver will cure it!
Nothing to see here, move along.
NOW!
Bring Out Your Dead
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
Because China cities are already ghost towns, shops all closed, nowhere to buy anything. And if they’re now shutting down Guangzhou that means the major port and shipping locations in China will be shut down in the next few weeks - guess what will happen then?
Don’t believe me? Fine. Watch this video and decide for yourselves:
https://www.bbc.com/news/av/business-51404388/coronavirus-shanghai-s-deserted-streets-and-metro
This is Shanghai, the “foreign” section, Bundt St., etc - normally jammed with people walking and shopping, streets wall to wall cars and bicycles.
We report you decide.
Tariffs + armyworm corn infection + half the pigs dead + unrest in HK + Coronavirus pandemic = Perfect Storm for ending the reign of Xi? We should hope so!
If people were ready for stuff like this, there wouldn’t be the panic buying. Buying a little extra every time you shop and storing it in a cool place and remembering to rotate it, will go a long way.
These last couple generations are among the first to not be prepared for hardship. Our ancestor’s survival often depended on it.
The book, One Second After, highlights this beautifully.
No.
That’s not going to harm anyone’s economy.
Not at all.

Single Mutation Could Significantly Enhance Wuhan Coronavirus
By AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR MICROBIOLOGY FEBRUARY 2, 2020
Decade-long structural studies by Fang Li of the University of Minnesota, et al. have shown how the SARS virus (SARS-CoV) interacts with animal and human hosts in order to infect them.
<SNIP>
Alarmingly, our data predict that a single mutation [at a specific spot in the genome] could significantly enhance [the Wuhan coronaviruss] ability to bind with human ACE2, the investigators write. For this reason, Wuhan coronavirus evolution in patients should be closely monitored for the emergence of novel mutations at the 501 position in its genome, and to a lesser extent, the 494 position, in order to predict the possibility of a more serious outbreak than has been seen so far. {emphasis mine.}
Very interesting video.
Singapore has a local outbreak that can't be directly tied to people from China - it suggests the virus has now establish a home in the community ... (there goes the neighborhood)
Looks like Cleveland on a weekend.
