Exactly. We are all sinners in need of salvation but it does not exonerate us from punishment in this life for the wrongs we have done. I think often God subjects us to greater punishment here for our sins as a way of disciplining us that He doesn't let us "get away with" our sinful acts. He is a loving God but also a righteous and just God.

Indeed, as Jesus paid for our sins in His Body on the cross- and lived until that righteous punishment was exhausted, then He willed His Spirit to depart so He could finish the work for the dead faithful.
