The number of cases on the quarantined Diamond Princess tripled, as the death toll from the virus in China surpassed 600.
Japanese officials said on Friday that 61 people had tested positive for the coronavirus on a quarantined cruise ship in Yokohama, a steep increase from the 20 confirmed cases on Thursday.
Officials have screened 273 passengers they said were potentially exposed to the virus. The 41 new patients were to be taken off the ship for medical treatment.
More than 2,000 passengers on the Diamond Princess ship have been stuck inside their cabins for days as part of a two-week quarantine. Meals have been irregular, and only on Thursday were small groups finally permitted to go outside and breathe some fresh air.
I keep hearing painful coughs from a foreigner in a nearby room, one passenger wrote on Twitter on Thursday, noting with concern that crew members were delivering meals from room to room. I might get infected today or tomorrow.

I remember visiting Mumbai on a ship once, and it seemed at least 75% our crew caught a cough that lasted weeks. Fortunately it wasn't serious, but very contagious in a shipboard environment. A cruise ship is like a petri dish.
So true about the petri dish thing. There have been instances where a passenger gets on with norovirus... and by day 4 or 5 of the cruise, 300+ people have it
EVERYONE here in Vietnam, is wearing a mask in public.
Everyone.
We’ve only got 12 cases (same as America) but this place is buttoned down already.
Black market in mask.
The 61 cases came from a sample of 273 people who had been tested because they were either showing symptoms or had been in close contact with those who did, according to the health ministry.
...
The number jumped because the tests are coming back.
There’s no reason to spread fear.
Thanks for nothing, China.
Ship of fools.
Stay safe!
“It is a Bio Weapon. It was supposed to be released in Los Angeles.”
Got a source for that?
Geez... I thought I was keeping up with all the virus threads. Ive definitely missed your stats. And Im a believer that its possible (its freakin China) that this could have been an intentional manufacturing of a bio weapon, but do you have a source for your stats and LA claim? (Sorry if I missed it). Thanks.
With that many cases in one place it should be interesting to mark the fatality rate amongst the passengers on this vessel. If it's anything like the fearmongers are saying, it should be pretty high.
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.
It will probably be the only accurate numbers for infectivity, incubation times, and mortality.
Agreed. I noticed of those who tested positive and were removed from the ship, none of them were in serious condition.
I also noticed that Japanese health officials are keeping people isolated from each other on the ship and have no fear of it spreading to other people on the ship.
Of course it will spread through the ventilation system.
We should have reasonably decent numbers in six months or so, but for now, this cruise ship is a very important experiment of nature.
This is a death ship floating.....
It is a Bio Weapon. It was supposed to be released in Los Angeles.
CoronaVirus was a proven bio weapons germ gone bad. China had intended to infect the USA, New York or Los Angeles.
Two of your posts the last two days without links...dont you think its irresponsible to post totally outlandish fear mongering without any source? How are we ever to believe you? If this is an unverified opinion, just tell us that, but dont post fake news.
