Romney says he had to follow 'conscience' on vote to convict Trump, expects ‘enormous consequences’

Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, told Fox News' Chris Wallace Wednesday in an exclusive interview that he "had to follow my conscience" in deciding to vote to convict President Trump on abuse of power, a decision that's likely to lead to serious blowback from Trump and others in the Republican Party.

"I believe that the act he took, an effort to corrupt an election is as destructive an attack on the oath of office and our Constitution as I can imagine," Romney said. "It is a high crime and misdemeanor within the meaning of the Constitution, and that is not a decision I take lightly. It is the last decision I want to take."

The 2018 House loss was more due to Ryan’s mismanagement, retirements of old GOP fossils, bad GOP candidates, the inability to get rid of/replace ZeroCare & the normal midterm loss that occurs. So I don’t blame her.

I certainly don’t think she’s been great guns at the job.

Anyway she isn’t her uncle, wrong to fire her because of him.

LOL, wasn’t that “What an A**hole” line from “Trading Places” where Mortimer Duke calls the Butler Coleman and tells him what they are going to do to Louis Winthorpe III, and Coleman hangs up and says that?

Romney needs to be recalled (will need a change in the law) or booted out of the party. Enough is enough.

All this because he thinks he has a political advantage if Trump fails to win this November. Crazy.

No. Mittens is sore he isn’t President and Donald is.

The Senate is just a public platform used by him to snipe at the President. Not sure the people of Utah intended that. Also not sure if he will go full on Democrat as that would anger the voters. But voting against the President will certainly make him a pariah in the Republican Party. Republican voters in Utah are probably going to be pretty unhappy about that. I just hope the Republican Party can expand its Senate majority in the November elections and reduce this weasel to irrelevance.

However, the real effort, beyond retaining the presidency, has to be focused on regaining control of the House and maybe making Lurch so miserable she goes away.

She has a young female Republican challenger. But it is a “safe” democrat Congressional District, so it will be tough fight to unseat her. Might be better (and more humiliating) if she returns to Congress and is successfully challenged for election as Minority leader - especially if the radical left wing element of the party manages to put their own person (AOC?) in.

What conscience?

Romney is an idiot - conscience should never dictate how one votes on Constitutional issues - YOU MUST FOLLOW THE LAW with regards to impeachment and whether the evil prosecutors proved their lousy case!!!

There was no due process, no cross examination, or witnesses allowed by the house for President Trump's defense, while the Dems called 18 witnesses, some in secret.

Yet Romney votes for witnesses in the Senate as though that's going to help President TRUMP! Well Captain Underpants, exactly how would that help??

His vote today makes him guilty of not protecting or defending the Constitution of the USA that he swore to do - all in favor of 'his conscience'.

That PUNK has no conscience. He is out for revenge, pure and simple. We can probably surmise that Romney is covering his own involvement in the Ukraine corruption - and his vote to convict will come back to bite him in the butt.

Jones from AL also reneged and voted guilty. Looks like Jeff Sessions will be getting his seat back.

As long as he resigns from the senate. Trump would mop the floor with him.

A quote from a movie I cannot recall the name of: What an A..hole is appropriate.

It brought to mind the movie "From the hip" with Judd Nelson In one scene he argues in the courtroom that "a$$hol3" is the appropriate word to describe one of the parties in the suit.

I agree with those who are now calling for Romney to be booted from the GOP.
