When I was a lot younger than 10, I would see the homeless regularly on my trips to NYC to see family. I understood quite well then that they existed due to their poor choices and or because the state hospitals turned them out. My family explained as much to me.
It would not take much to explain to a 10 year-old coming to this country how few homeless exist relative to the population and why they are homeless and to drive them around to various neighborhoods of varying property values and explain the correlation of the level of homes to the industry in the area.
