The Trump administrations new homelessness czar is proposing a wholesale shift in the countrys philosophy for aiding the unhoused, potentially upending existing approaches as big cities and states struggle with the deepening problem.
Robert Marbut, the head of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, the top federal body on the issue, blames the rise in homelessness in large part on a policy called Housing First, which was conceived in the 1990s in New York City and soon became best practice but whose definition has since become contested. It aims to get people a reliable home before focusing on services such as rehabilitation, treatment or finding a job.....
The number of homeless in the U.S. steadily fell from nearly 650,000 in 2007 to less than 550,000 in 2016, according to statistics from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. But since then, the number of unhoused has begun to rise, hitting approximately 552,000 in 2018.

Not sure why I have the feeling that the numbers from the Obama years are BS.
The way to end poverty is to give people money.
The way to end homelessness is to give people housing.
Are we seeing a pattern here?
The truth of the matter is the moment Trump gets involved the NY Slimes headline above the fold will start with Trumps Concentration Camps...
A rise from 550K to 552K is statistical noise. From those statistics you can't even draw a reasonable conclusion that there has been any increase at all.

The way to solve the gun problem, give unarmed citizens guns?
True. An increase of 0.36% is not too worrisome, at least to me. Any information on how much of that increase happened in one particular West coast state?
Meant “West Coast”. Should have looked more carefully.
Left coast works too.
Homelessness is only part of the fruit. The root, which must be eliminated first, is a combination of many things; lousy schools, busted families, drugs, lax welfare inducements to layabout, misfeasence of administration in liberal-run cities, etc., etc., etc. Good luck in correcting much of that.
I suspect that in many cases, the real root is mental illness.
Mayor of New York 2024 donald j trump
Busted families is the main cause of the degradation of our nation. In Canada when single mothers get welfare, the fathers are allowed to stay in the homes. Maybe that’s why Canada does not have hoards of undisciplined youth running in their streets.
Mental illness and drug abuse
I would propose build the wall to plug the Methamphetamine trail and homelessness will drop precipitously as the present crop of Methheads die off.
Rise in homelessness follows the elimination of Mental Wards and rise in DOPE users the last under Obama. Obamacare bankrupted many, especially the Chronically ill. My Niece is $100,000 in the Obamacare hole. Severe Lupus, Lyme’s, Jacksonian seizures, trashed lungs, liver, and kidneys from the drugs they used on her. Had to file Bankruptcy, it sits in escrow when her husband decided not to go through Bankruptcy. Now she wants to divorce the POS child abuser he wants to hang it around her neck. Child is 14, Duchene MD 80 lbs soaking wet, he beats him, browbeats him, kid wants to commit suicide, hides in closet and P’s his pants when his abusive father comes near. He tried to steal the house from them. Threatened to kill their pets.
Kid may live to see 40 in a wheelchair. Mom has maybe with right treatment see another 6 yrs.
A potentially good way for dealing with the homeless can be called the “anti-Agenda 2030”.
For years, small towns in middle America have been on the decline, which is welcomed and encouraged by the UN and other villains, who wish to depopulate middle America.
So President Trump could begin a “re-population” program, that in cooperation with the states would first rebuild these towns, then encourage four or five different groups to move there.
The first group would be blue collar production workers less to produce new products than to improve existing products. This group would also include the disabled and ‘trustee’ type former convicts, as a way for them to return to society and make a living.
The second group would be long term care patients and their caregivers. Nursing homes in the US are often prohibitively expensive, and don’t always provide the best care.
The third group would be infrastructure and administrative types to keep the town running well.
The fourth group would be the homeless, in a “workfare” type program, so that they could have their needs met while building up their savings.
Eject 30 million illegals & I’ll be there will be plenty of low-cost housing.
All his numbers were except how much money he gave Iran and what’s in his bank accounts.
How many housing units and what type are built, and their market value and/or monthly cost is mostly determined by local and state economic, demographic and governance factors, not the federal government.
The immediate means, institutions and facilities for addressing mental health issues and public safety issues are mostly determined at the local and state level, and only by federal means when the federal means are unnecessarily meddling.
Homelessness is a local and state issue. The fact that it can be occurring in different places across multiple states does not make it an issue the federal government should be addressing.
All the states with a large homeless problem can on their own convene their own meetings to examine and question the practices being employed to address homelessness, if they want to, and without federal urging, money or policies. Their own voters can determine how their local and state officials are doing, without any federal word, money, action or policy.
” Nursing homes in the US are often prohibitively expensive, “
I know someone paying $18,000.00 a MONTH for a loved one.(private room). Excellent care,though.
