[This study is 4 months old, but still very timely] A study published today in JAMA compared the ubiquitous surgical (or medical) mask, which costs about a dime, to a less commonly used respirator called an N95, which costs around $1. The study reported "no significant difference in the effectiveness" of medical masks vs. N95 respirators for prevention of influenza or other viral respiratory illness.

Equally worthless?
“Equally worthless?”
Maybe, they don’t seem to address that aspect.
Joke all you want, but I for one, am starting to prepare in case things go south.
Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
Just saying.
Considering the eyes are susceptible to the transmission of infection, medical personnel should consider wearing appropriate eye protection as well.
We need a mask that works when standing around flaming liberals so we don’t catch whatever is ailing them.
Neither of them will help protect against coronavirus.
Nonetheless, 3M is completely sold out of them at the moment
(I work in industrial warehousing, this is one of our stock items)
Sorry that was directed at the person under your post.
Sorry about that.
I think it will indeed help.
Not fool proof, but in the list of things to try, it is certainly one to start now.
The more you practice, the more you get accustomed.

Above is some information of N95 masks with regard to slall viruses.
An N85, properly worn, will filter out 4% of the virus particles.. The N95 is not foolproof.
But, properly worn it can be helpful.
Equally worthless?
I dunno. If both filter a significant percentage of the air particles into your mouth, and block you from touching your mouth, Ill take em. Same for good goggles.
Why do they need to be good?
I have a very cheap pair I think are from Walmart.
Mind you, they’re not for all the time, but if you are in a crowded situation, it can certainly be a benefit.
I have a box of the Surgical Masks for some Dusty work ,LOL

Whike I certainly agree that nothing is perfect (especially these flimsy masks), I read that differently than you. 46% of particles (the largest ones) were collected in the first stage (which wasnt defined in any way), 49% (somewhat smaller particles) in the 2nd stage (also not defined), and 4% (the smallest particles) by the backup filter. This suggests to me that 99% couldnt get past the backup filter.
I disagree.
The original study done in 2009 cannot be directly compared to this study, which was done between 2011-2015.
However, in the most recent study, it's clear that participants were constantly urged and reminded to always wear their masks or N95s.
In 2009, 30% of hospital personnel came down with the flu.
The current study was spread across four years, and the rate of flu infection appears to be conspicuously lower.
Obviously, infection rates go up and down each year because of several variables, but it still looks like wearing a mask or a N95 does offer some protection.
really....wow.....a lot cheaper...
TE·O·TWAW·KI
A catastrophic event that destroys the existing institutions and norms of society.
Acronym from “the end of the world as we know it.”
Wearing both was recently recommended by our local EMS coordinator. The sick person wearing a mast will definitely reduce possible transmission.
