Some Senate Republicans and Trump administration officials are signaling the impeachment trial could spill over into next week.
The timeline is largely dependent on two things: how long senators want to deliberate and the level of cooperation between Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) which has been in short supply during the trial so far.
Its a possibility that this could extend on another day or so, said Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) when asked about the possibility of the trial continuing into next week.
The trial was already expected to go until early Saturday morning. Because of the impeachment trial rules, if the proceedings go past Saturday it would automatically roll over into Monday, the same day as the Iowa caucuses.
Rounds, when asked what could slow down the proceedings, said there were some time constraints, including how many members want to take 15 minutes to make a statement on the Senate floor.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) told reporters he would be surprised if the trial wrapped up on Friday and that without cooperation it could drag on for days.
It could carry us over to the first part of next week, Cornyn said.
Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), a member of GOP leadership, told reporters after a closed-door caucus lunch that the timing of the end of the trial wasn't locked down.
McConnell, according to Blunt, is expected to offer a resolution that lays out the process for wrapping up that proceeding. The original rules provide few guidelines about how the chamber gets from the witness vote to final votes.

Extend into next week and none of the bigshot Dems get to go to Iowa.
This is a terrible idea. Five days is an eternity, and who knows what the left will dream up and leak between now and then.
” if the proceedings go past Saturday it would automatically roll over into Monday, the same day as the Iowa caucuses.”
Mitch should take a hard-line saying the Senate will stay in session until midnight Saturday if they can’t reach resolution today.
Feel the Bern.
I feel like this is more of a warning by the republicans that they will not shut down the senate for the caucus, so if the democrats insist on talking and talking, they will prevent three of their candidates from getting to the Caucus.
What's to cooperate on? We won, they lost. It's over.
Looks like an experiment to drive TV rating even lower than they are now.
The GOP is hopeless...they drag it out and more crap will appear in the NYT and then we will have to have witnesses..
The State of the Union Speach is Tuesday...and all we will hear is the impeachment vote Wednesday
it would automatically roll over into Monday, the same day as the Iowa caucuses.
Stupid Bolton is champing at the bit.
Just make sure if it is delayed that there is a full session Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday...
Extend it until December!
Any extension will result in this farce lasting months
which is what the rats so desperately want.
Hey, McConnell... Kick that sorry, black-robed moron back to his throne room, bang your gavel and put this leftist vanity project out in the trash, where it belongs. Maybe send Schumer along with it.
Give a politician 10 minutes of free air time on TV and they will take it. They get 10 minutes to pontificate and they have 10 minutes of free production TV which they can use for their re-election campaign ads later, showing them speaking before the Senate. Priceless advantage against challengers, regardless of the Red or Blue color of the politician taking advantage of the time. It matters not what they say, its the optics theyll take advantage of; its free to use later!
Add to it that what theyll be talking about feeds into their base, pro or anti-Trump? For Democrats its a win. For Republicans its a win.
These Senators are NOT going to let this opportunity to show themselves at the podium go to waste.
That’s what I was thinking. :)
They will do anything to disrupt the State of the Union address on Feb. 4 - A N Y T H I N G!!
That makes sense. We’ll see how it plays out! Hope they get it done.
That might be... but more about posturing and attempting to pull something out of nothing more likely.
The mainstream Dems dont want those 3 to win anyway. They want Biden.
