'Shortsightedness': Republicans blast Doug Collins for launching Senate challenge to GOP incumbent

Top Senate Republicans are warning Rep. Doug Collins that running against Sen. Kelly Loeffler in Georgia’s special Senate primary could pave the way for an otherwise unlikely Democratic sweep in the state in November.

”The shortsightedness in this decision is stunning. Doug Collins’ selfishness will hurt David Perdue, Kelly Loeffler, and President Trump," National Republican Senatorial Committee Executive Director Kevin McLaughlin said in a statement.

Collins, a Trump ally and part of his impeachment defense team, announced his Senate candidacy on Wednesday. He was passed over for an appointment to the Senate by Gov. Brian Kemp after Johnny Isakson resigned at the end of last year.

"For months, I have given serious deliberation to the role I should serve that would best benefit GA, the country and @realDonaldTrump," he tweeted. "Today, I have officially launched my campaign for Senate to do just that."

Collins addressed concerns that he and Loeffler may "tear each other apart and open up the seat for a Democrat."

"We are not concerned about that at all. I’m concerned about going for the people of Georgia," he said. "We just need to have a process that lets people decide, lets them choose for themselves how they want to see this vision. I think we fought for the president, we fought for our state, and we fought for this country. And we're going to continue to do that. I look forward to a good exchange of ideas and look forward to this election."

I wish Doug Collins could hop across the state line and run for Lamar Alexander’s seat, or Kelly Loeffler could run in a primary against several RINOs. She has been a lot better than expected. Trump should have enough coattails to carry either of them to a win, but it would be better to have both of them in D.C. in some capacity.

Wonder if he is interested in an admin post? That would kill 3 birds with one stone. In your face Gov. Lady stays. Collins isn’t left out in the cold.

“U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary. In this role, Doug leads his Republican colleagues on a wide breadth of issues within the Committee’s purview, which include fighting to uphold and safeguard the Second Amendment, protecting the lives of unborn children, defending religious liberty, and overseeing our law enforcement agencies.”

Director of FBI?

I know nothing about Georgia politics, nor how this will play out, but I do know that the governor owes his election to Trump, and that he was a bit ungrateful ignoring Trump’s stated request.

If Collins loses out, can he still run for his old seat?

Are you kidding me. Collins has been a solid supporter of Trump. We don’t just need an affirmation vote. You need people who will stand up for Trump when things get sticky and they will. I don’t see her go to the mic or in CNN defending the President during impeachment. Contrast that with Brain from Indiana and Scott of Florida. How good does it feel to have them calling out the coup at every turn. Trump needs legitimate allies not just affirmative votes.

Maybe but believing a primary challenge would cost the Republicans GA up and down. The ticket is silly

Having 50 U.S. Senators defending Trump on CNN is no more effective than having 5.

The Senate is a legislative body, not a TV show.

I’d also point out that a lot of the complaints you see here on FR about Loeffler were also made about Rick Scott when he ran.

In fact, I can’t think of a single GOP senator who HASN'T been called a RINO here at one time or another.

You all are easily appeased. How often have you seen her in front of the cameras staunchly supporting Trump? That’s her in re-election mode. Once she is firmly entrenched she cannot be trusted to stand by Trump through each fire storm that the Dems will surely produce. Contrast her to Braun, Scott, Blackburn. Those are actual allies and not just affirmative votes. Get it together. Trump needs allies!

Scott was clearly never apart of the Romney wing. He also votes with Trump most of the time but have an actual Trump ally in his seat would suit everyone fine. Trump can’t finish the job if you just keep re-electing people who are half in half out. The next impeachment is coming, the next controversy is coming. Trump needs allies.

I still haven't seen anyone make a coherent case about what Trump will accomplish with Collins in the U.S. Senate that he won’t accomplish with Loeffler there.

In fact, if Collins is such a strong Trump ally then I would suggest it’s far more important to have him serving as the ranking Republican on the House Judiciary Committee than as the junior senator from Georgia.

A Challenge should make her stronger.

Just make them raise their own money for the primary. The GOP shouldn’t be picking sides in Primaries by funding candidates, unless a stealth ‘Rat is running against them.

And for two elections in two years. This is a special election for the remaining two years of Isakson’s term. There will then be another election in 2022 for a full 6 year term.

Exactly.

Kellygirl should face the voters.
McLaughlin should be quiet.

Odd so many freepers parrot the line of party officials.

Collins reminds me of young people who prefer the speed of their own voice rather than the clarity of their thinking. He could learn from the Dersh-meister or any other competent lawyer.
