Theres a reason Mitch McConnell has been Senate Majority Leader for the past 13 years: He gets the job done.
And the biggest part of that job is keeping the GOP caucus, however necessary. At this point, he appears to have pulled off the feat once again.

Dont expose yourself to the potential of unknown down-side.
Keep things under control and close things down ASAP.
If the House had provided clear evidence of a high crime or misdemeanor, Id have backed a full trial. They didnt.
Its over.

Well said. And I think you express the New Majority in FR.
New because it wasn’t that long ago when the majority favored a full blown trial. But most of us are over that now.
Within the first year I believe there were many, even enough, GOP Senators, that did not like Trump and would have tried to remove him. But they finally saw where Trump’s supporters were and backed down.
New Senate Rule
Anyone who votes to call witnesses will be called to testify as a witness.
If they vote down witnesses in the Senate, the Impeachment is over.
They can try it again. I think the public has had enough.
yeah, “breaking” ... i repeatedly said all along that the NYT story quoting Mitch as saying “we don’t have the votes” based on a single anonymous source was fake news ... and the bazillion other fake news stories based on that one fake news story were just second-hand fakes as well ...
Graham will get Biden in after this is over..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That’s going to be after the hearings about the origin of Russia,Russia,Russia and after the hearings about the Kavanaugh fiasco he’s already promised, right?
Cocaine Mitch?
“I dont think the democrats want witnesses either even if they dont admit it.”
they don’t because they don’t want to be tied up for months doing this ... but of course they’ll VOTE for witnesses and then hammer the GOP for voting to not have any ...
I wanted a vote to dismiss at the start.
Now voting to deny witnesses is the next best thing.
I’m not willing to open Trump up to craven wickedness.
I realize he has said he wants a trial. I don’t know how much of that is for public consumption, and how much is from his gut.
He’s used to prevailing a lot in court. There’s too much on the line here, and personal opinion can trump the U. S. Constitution as we have already seen.
That’s my take on it. Thanks for the note of agreement.
“There are a bunch of FReepers who are actually going to be disappointed to hear this ... because theyve been saying for months that McConnell has been conspiring behind the scenes to have Trump removed from office.”
you got it ... there’s a handful of trolls here that do nothing but attack the GOP Senate and individual GOP Senators, and NEVER, EVER say anything positive about ANY individual GOP Congressperson or anything positive about the GOP ... it’s clear that every last one of them are nothing but stealth trolls ...
Yeah, good call.
Thanks.
Impeachment was never was about conviction. That wasn’t going to happen based on the garbage the House produced. It’s always been about damaging POTUS/GOP Senate and creating beltway gridlock. The Dems have certainly succeeded in causing beltway gridlock. The trial verdict will be given by the American people in November.
Who pushed thru all those judges.
The GOP took the Senate in 2015, that’s how McConnell was able to block Merrick Garland.
LOL!
It is a waste of time to appeal to Democrats sense of decency because they have none. The only thing they fear is a bad political outcome. Stop being nice. It doesnt work.
Amen!
I don’t want them trotting Bolton out to spew, and then going through weeks of them playing up what he said and how that is proof positive that Trump doesn’t know what he’s doing.
Foreign leaders are exposed to all this ‘stuff’, and it doesn’t help us at a bargaining table.
There’s nothing to be gained by allowing the Left to trump up things bigger than life, and trash Trump endlessly from a venue like this.
