Dissatisfaction with democracy 'at record high'

Dissatisfaction with democracy within developed countries is at its highest level in almost 25 years, according to University of Cambridge researchers.

Academics have analysed what they say is the biggest global dataset on attitudes towards democracy, based on four million people in 3,500 surveys.

The UK and the United States had particularly high levels of discontent.

"Across the globe, democracy is in a state of malaise," report author Roberto Foa said.

The study, from the University of Cambridge's Centre for the Future of Democracy, has tracked views on democracy since 1995 - with the figures for 2019 showing the proportion dissatisfied rising from 48% to 58%, the highest recorded level.

"We find that dissatisfaction with democracy has risen over time and is reaching an all-time global high, in particular in developed countries," Dr Foa said.

The research, covering 154 countries around the world, is based on asking people if they are satisfied or dissatisfied with democracy in their own country.

Data for some countries goes back to the 1970s and the long-term picture recorded a steady upwards swing of the pendulum towards more satisfaction with democracy through the last decades of the 20th Century.

This was an era of the collapse of Communist power in Eastern and Central Europe and the apparent ascendancy of Western democracy - with "global sentiment" appearing to be supportive of the rise in democracy.

But over the past decade, this appears to have shifted steadily in a more negative direction - with rising dissatisfaction.

Societies can be and are better served by wise dictators and kings, than by mob rule.

Democracy is per se “a bad thing,” to be avoided.

What this poll shows is that most people find democracy to be a sham used to empower hacks who do not act in their constituents’ interest.

BS, dissatisfaction with deplorables being allowed to vote is at an all time high. That's not the same as dissatisfaction with democracy, especially with democracy as implemented by the Founding Fathers in the US.

Until your freedom is taken away, people will always complain about one thing or another.

Title is so true! If we didn’t have democracy, we wouldn’t be going through this impeachment trial! :/

Well, I say old chaps...it's a bloody good thing we here in the USA don't live in a Democracy. We live in a Representative Republic.

Sure, it has its issues but look elsewhere for the warts on a Democracy.

I have always had problems with democracies that always devolve into thugocracy-mob-rule. That is why I am head over heels in love with Our Republic.....if we’re allowed to keep it.

Well, we should remember Winston Churchill’s two adages in that democracy is the worst form of government, save for all of the others tried and also that one of the scariest things about democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.

No, but that's an accident of birth.

The so-called democracies of most of the western world provide votes with a false choice, becuase both side or all sides are out to fleece the populace. In modern times, the rise of globalism results in most politicians subsrcibing to the "best for the world" model, and they have no qualms about making bad deals for their constituents. The US government has systematically goverened in a way to deliberalty (albeit slowy) diminsi the stndard of living in the US to advace the goal of "harmonization" of the world population.

Contrast that image with the faces of the crowd behind PDJT at a rally—any rally. I keep tuning in to those just to see the rapture in those faces, the pure joy of people happy with a positive, patriotic outlook on life in America. Those folks are on their feet most of the night, cheering, smiling, chanting, laughing. Contrast to the dour looks on the faces of the candidates to oppose PDJT, those who would undo America first and return the country to dissatisfaction.

What we have now isn’t Democracy as initially meant.

Instead we have ‘Hyper-Democracy’.

Corrupt, venal people have succeeded in subverting the system to buy votes and to assure their own access to social ascendency and political power.

The GOP isn’t blameless in this either. If only by standing around and pretending it’s not happening, they have by default, assisted in the Liberal plan.

‘Hyper-Democracy’ is the degraded form of Democracy.

Academics...and the media (and even the churches).

And it is all according to the Marxist plan.

I understand your point. But why do you propose a wise dictator as an alternative. My old country had quite a share of wise dictators from Lenin through Stalin through Brezhnev. By accident of birth, I lived under wise dictator Brezhnev, my parents under the wisest of them all, Stalin. All wise dictators always devolve into bloody monsters if unchecked. Is that what we want for America?
