GOP develops aggressive 'Plan B' in impeachment trial, as several Dems appear to support acquittal: source

With several Democrats openly floating the possibility they might vote to acquit President Trump, congressional Republicans are planning an aggressive "Plan B" strategy in the event some Republicans break off and demand additional witnesses in the president's impeachment trial, Fox News has learned.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., privately said early Tuesday that he wasn't sure there were enough Republican votes to block more witnesses, given that some moderates in the GOP's 53-47 Senate majority were wavering. Any witness resolution would likely require four Republican defections in the Senate, because in the event of a 50-50 tie, Chief Justice of the United States John Roberts is highly likely to abstain rather than assert his debatable power to cast a tiebreaking vote.
Late Tuesday night, a Senate leadership source told Fox News that Republicans were specifically assessing the viability of two alternative options.

Wouldn’t Vice President Pence be the tiebreaking vote, as with all other Senate business?

I think mitch is actually trying to do the right thing.
Look at who he has to work with..romney, collins, murkowski and graham who talks big but is still mccain’s best buddy at heart.
is he perfect? far from.
But he got the judges through and will continue to do so and he has handled the impeachment nonsense well so far.
Now end it.

Manchin is a certain no vote because his state is conservative. If that is true, then why hasn't he switched parties? He could have been part of the majority for the last six years. He has decided to forgo the privileges of majority and remain a Dem in a conservative state why?

If McConnell had any balls, he’d offer the prosecution (House Democrats) the very same number of witnesses that the defense (Trump) was allowed in the House trial — ZERO.

Partner, these Democrat Senators have more Brains than the six (6) Traitor Republican Senators.
President Trump's lawyers said very emphatically that the Charges were not Impeachable Charges.
Also, the Democrat Senators know there is an election in 2020 and they want to position themselves in a reelection mode instead of the DemonRat Socialist Party they also saw the crown from the Great State of New Jersey.
The crown size outside of where Presdient Trump was having the Political rally was Huge. Surely, those 5 or 6 Republican Senators should have seen that huge crowd size in a state that no Republican has carried since the "Great Ronald Wilson Reagan" in that landslide victory of 1984.

Partner, you have written words that all Freepers can agree. Not me. McConnell has way more power than you give him credit for.
He has tremendous influence over the GOP machinery nationwide. When he wants to sink a senatorial candidate, he does so at will. How many times has he done it to our candidates?
Even when one of our guys slips through the primary, Mitch has the war chest to finance a third candidate against us.
If Mitch wants you to lose your Senate seat, you will lose your Senate seat, even if it means giving the seat to a Dem.
He is just not putting the screws to his RINOs on this.

Fox News and the rest of you have forgotten that it takes two thirds, 66 votes, of the Senate to convict.

Only when the Vice President is presiding. With impeachment, the Chief Justice presides and has no vote.

But it only needs a majority to call for witnesses.
If Trump's team says these are not impeachable offenses, and yet McConnell lets the Republicans vote for witnesses, isn't that really the all-powerful McConnell de facto rejecting the President's argument?
Why waste the Senate's time with witnesses when the charges aren't impeachable in the first place?
A vote for witnesses is a rejection of the Trump team's core argument. Why would McConnell want to allow that?
