In the month since New York enacted a sweeping series of changes to its bail laws that have set thousands of defendants free pending their trials, many law enforcement officials have urged lawmakers to reconsider the law.
The roster of prominent critics includes Dermot Shea, the New York City police commissioner, as well as Richard P. Donoghue, the top federal law enforcement official in Brooklyn.
Opponents have seized on defendants recently released under the new bail laws who were rearrested on suspicion of committing new crimes, including several anti-Semitic incidents.
The most prominent of those instances involved Tiffany Harris, a Brooklyn woman who allegedly slapped three Orthodox women in late December. Ms. Harris was released without bail, only to be arrested a day later for assaulting another person.
On Tuesday, Ms. Harriss legal woes intensified as Attorney General William P. Barr appeared in Brooklyn to announce federal hate-crime charges against her, promising zero tolerance for this kind of violence.
This will not be an isolated case, Mr. Barr said during a visit to the Boro Park Jewish Community Council. We will move aggressively if we see this kind of activity.
Mr. Barr did not specifically mention bail reform, but his citation of Ms. Harriss case will undoubtedly give new ammunition to its opponents, and could increase pressure on lawmakers in Albany to make modifications.

Yeah I’m done with the “we’re better than that” stuff.
The law exists. We know it’s absurd.
But let’s stop always taking the higher road.
Nail the other side for their hate crimes finally
I say let the criminals run rampant in New York.
It will only increase the pressure for New Yorkers to demand the right to carry.
How does Black on Black crime get the additional boost as a hate crime?
I don’t think it can.
Bad law if that’s true.
The law is being to charge a black woman who repeatedly assaulted white Jewish women.
Hate crime laws create “preferred classes”; prosecute any crimes to the fullest extent of the law, and avoid the preferential treatment of any groups. “Hate crimes” is libspeak for “thought crimes”; the act is a crime regardless of motive.
Why is there a Congressional Black Caucus?? Is that like the Klan?
There’s no such thing as a “hate crime” or “hate speech.”
Well I suppose its good to see that Bagpipes Barr isnt totally comatose.
Now if we could just get him to take a look at his DOJ...
L
And I thought he might let a little thing like history’s biggest conspiracy to overthrow the U.S. government get in the way of getting things accomplished.
i think bail system ( at least insofar as i have seen it operate several times) is corrupt as hell
just like a good part of our courts nowadays, alas,
‘civil forfeiture’ from unconvicted, and therefore presumably innocent, defendants... charging for court-ordered procedures even if the defendant cannot afford them.....i could go on but a whole lot of what’s ACTUALLY going on in SOME, at least, of our courts is as CORRUPT as the DNC and the House of Reps!
we have to be candid, we have problems that need to be Cleaned (Swamps that need Serious Draining).. if we are to really get our liberties back as PDJT wishes
DeBlasio’s is reportedly FURIOUS at Barr charging this psychotic Tiffany woman who the City let out with no bail three times despite public assaults.
