Guess the State: Democrat-Run Fiasco Edition -- Since 1931, no other state has had single-party Dem rule at the state level as long as this one. And it shows.

The last time Republicans held a majority on this state's Supreme Court was in the 1920s.  Its Court of Appeals has never had a Republican majority.

The last time Republicans held a majority in both houses of the state Legislature at the same time was 1930.  In the 89 years from 1931 to the present, Democrats have held a majority of both houses of the state Legislature for 79 of the 89 years.

Since 1931, Democrats have held the governor's office for 69 of the 89 years.  Even when a Republican has been governor, his powers have been greatly limited because he has never held a majority in both houses of the state legislature while in office.

What state am I?

If you guessed CA, IL, NY, NJ, or MA, you're wrong.  If you guessed NM, go to the head of the class (here) (here).  Since 1931, no other state has had single-party Dem rule at the state level as long as New Mexico.  And how has New Mexico fared under the stewardship of single party Democrat rule?  As we shall see, not so well.

EDUCATION: By all accounts, New Mexico has one of the worst, if not the worst, K–12 public education system in the country.  It is a system that spends vast sums of money but has little or no accountability for the students, teachers, administrators, parents, or elected officials.  Here are the sobering stats.  It has recently been rated as the worst state public school system in the country.  Among the country's 11,850 school districts, only one from New Mexico, Los Alamos, is rated in the top 1,000.  A charity named the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy estimates that an astonishing 46% of the adults in the state are functional illiterates.

Right. There’s no point at all of traveling half way around the world to a new country if you don’t intend to assimilate and take the most advantage of the many opportunities.

I think the old timers knew that. They were so happy to be out of their oppressive, poverty stricken, homeland that they wanted to make the most of their citizenship in the US.

America only asked that they assimilate and work to the best of their capabilities, so they would not be a burden to others.

Our grandparents had enough self-respect and pride to appreciate the honest rationale of that request and were happy to comply

Throw in the illegals and...

Speaking of illegals... Mexico has always been ruled by an upper caste of white Spaniards who have remained in power by exporting their restless Native American underclass to the United States. Los Estados Unidos is turning into one giant Indian reservation.

One big difference in New Mexico is that you also have a lot of peasants of Mexican extraction (both legal and illegal) in the population mix.

"peasants of Mexican extraction" = Native Americans, as they are now styled

If I may split the difference I think that the large Native American population may play a role in the underperformance of the state while at the same time not holding that Native Americans are inherently stupid. As with all group identities, the issue is one of culture.

Those who identify predominately with Native American culture identify themselves with people who were utterly and completely defeated and marginalized. In their defeat and surrender they were made dependent on the US government for their continued survival, a compound tragedy as the US government has let them down repeatedly.

Poverty, alcoholism, hopelessness, and general dysfunctionality follow from clinging to an identity that has been marginalized and is maladapted to modern society. Kids in that culture are offered very little hope of success, and much like intercity black kids, there is an element of rejection of the change that education would bring.

The same cultural conditions that hinder education also make them amenable to Democrat political positions. A group of people who are downtrodden, had their pride destroyed, lack hope for providing for their own future, are maladapted to success the modern world and have a history of dependency on the government are going to vote Democrat until they can be led to see that those policies are the source of their tragedy. There is a vicious circle of poor education leading to Democrat governments that leads to more poor education. Democrats feed off of poor education.

If I may jump in here, I’d like to make a distinction that is peripherally related to your comment in this particular instance. I can make no educated judgment as to the Native American population in New Mexico.

However in various discussions I come to see that people generally don’t make a distinction between the words stupid and ignorant. I had a discussion with a liberal online and I said you are ignorant of the facts, she went postal on me saying that I was calling her stupid. I pointed out that ignorance can be fixed by learning the facts. Stupid is just plain stupid. A very significant difference.

If one is ignorant and refuses to learn the facts, then one is stupid.

Census Bureau 2019 New Mexico Estimates...

Hispanic - 49%

Non-Hispanic White - 37%

Native American - 11%

The Good News...

The Permian Basin tight shale oil field laps over the Texas border into New Mexico.

In 2019, thanks to fracking, New Mexico pumped more oil than Alaska.

Only Texas and North Dakota pump more oil than New Mexico.

New Mexico pumps about 900,000 barrels per day.

You’re right. The fewest native aspect is interesting. I never thought about that. I was speaking of my seat of pants sense that WV has been forever (D).

Georgia was the last state to ever elect a Republican Governor, having gone from 1865 to 2002 before Sonny Perdue was elected. It’s Senate went from 1865-2002 with a Democratic majority and its House from 1865 to 2004.

Georgia was the last state to ever elect a Republican Governor, having gone from 1865 to 2002 before Sonny Perdue was elected.

And it looks like they haven't elected a Democrat governor since then.

Lester Maddox actually lost the popular vote to the Republican in 1966, but because no one had a majority the Democrat-dominated legislature picked Maddox.

They’re counting hispanics as white in that graphic. Your number is correct.

All correct. Maddox lost the popular vote to Bo Callaway but at that time, if no one got a majority of the vote, and with Ellis Arnall in the race, they did not, the House elected the Governor. It was overwhelmingly Democrat at the time and Maddox turned out to be a rather good Governor and later LT Gov.
