Georgia was the last state to ever elect a Republican Governor, having gone from 1865 to 2002 before Sonny Perdue was elected.

And it looks like they haven't elected a Democrat governor since then.

Lester Maddox actually lost the popular vote to the Republican in 1966, but because no one had a majority the Democrat-dominated legislature picked Maddox.

All correct. Maddox lost the popular vote to Bo Callaway but at that time, if no one got a majority of the vote, and with Ellis Arnall in the race, they did not, the House elected the Governor. It was overwhelmingly Democrat at the time and Maddox turned out to be a rather good Governor and later LT Gov.
