As authorities in China scrambled to handle a coronavirus that has killed at least 81 people, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday described a surging potential crisis even as they pushed back on the latest thinking from Beijing about just how easily it spreads.
Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDCs National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters that the number of confirmed cases stateside had reached fiveand that there had been a total of 110 persons under investigation for the virus in 26 states over the past week.
Thirty-two of those people tested negative, and there had been no confirmed person-to-person transmissions inside the country, Messonnier said on Monday.
The confirmed cases in the U.S. include patients in Orange County, California; a man in his 30s in Washington state; a woman in her 60s in Chicago; a passenger who felt ill after flying into Los Angeles International Airport; and a student at Arizona State University who does not live in university housing, the CDC said on Sunday. All of the U.S. cases appeared to involve patients who had recently traveled from Wuhan, Chinathe epicenter of the deadly virus.
Seventy-three people were still being evaluated for the virus as of Monday.
We understand that many people in the United States are worried about this virus and how it will affect Americans, Messonnier said, adding that risk depends on exposure, which for Americans remained low on Monday.
In each U.S. case, health officials have said they will trace the patients contacts and identify anyone who may have had prolonged exposure, then monitor those individuals for symptoms. In the U.S., anyone who has had close contact with confirmed patients has not been quarantined unless and until they display symptoms.

The China CDC disagrees, as do most international public health experts.
Geez.
CDC considers their first priority preventing panic. Consider than and take their pronouncements with appropriate grains of salt.
The Chinese communists love rule by “political struggle.” Mao did it non-stop for 25 years and his successors have always kept the practice alive, albeit to less destructive effect.
Here in America we say: “Never let a perfectly good crisis go to waste.”
“CDC considers their first priority preventing panic. Consider than and take their pronouncements with appropriate grains of salt.”
Frankly it seems anytime anyone says anything official that isnt “freak out and panic” there is always a group online to run in and scream “they are lying!”.
So if there is an “agenda”, I’m starting to wonder which group has it.
There may be an economic factor to it’s spread.
No cases reported in heavy China destinations like NYC and Dc.
Maybe ‘rich’ people are less likely to catch the virus for many obvious reasons.
That would make it much less dangerous here than in China.
Good point.
Thanks for the summary. You would have failed journalism school because of your inclination to actually report the news covered by the headline within the first few paragraphs!
"Two systems... one world-wide snow job."
“possible” US Cases hit 110
The only cases that have been confirmed was around five the last I saw.
Once again, reporting for sensationalist (seemingly) purposes.
Trump cant trust the Cdc .
They are leftists first .
My lib friends are demanding they want the borders get closed .
Yes, and just below the “110” headline it says that 32 of those tested negative.
So they are counting everyone they EVER thought had the virus, including those where they’ve proven they did not have the virus.
That’s a real helpful number.
I’m with pepsi_junkie on this.
The CDC is basing their experience on none of the plane passengers who had contact with the known US cases has come down with it yet.
But then the virus has a 14 day incubation period and these people just flew in late last week. The CDC hasn’t had time to observe asymptomatic or person to person transmission yet. So what the heck is the CDC doing, contradicting the Chinese who have had time to observe it and are warning us that it is occurring.
There are 3 cases of known transmission outside of China, but they are not in the US.
The only explanation for the CDC’s stance is to prevent panic. It certainly isn’t coming down on the side of caution until we know.
The CDC at the very least, should be asking all the passengers and anyone who came into contact with the known cases to self quarantine for 14 days from the contact.
The CDC is going to avoid inconveniencing 120 people at the risk of killing tens of thousands.
Four people here in the Twilight Zone are being watched for infection. This is real.
I didnt say they were lying. But I do believe that even if they thought it was bad they would think a panic would be terrible, hospitals would fill up with people with sniffles, preventing real patients from coming forward. Plus the collateral damage if people fleeing, etc. better to play it steady and calm while working behind the scenes with our hair on fire
Do contacts include the other 400 people on the aircraft they flew coming back from China? Close proximity, air recirculation, minimal fresh make-up air, filters nowhere near capable of capturing virus-size particles. I know when I fly on domestic flights in winter Im very likely to get sick afterwards. Have any good studies been conducted analyzing viral infection transmission among airline passengers?
People will not self-quarantine. Remember Dr. Nancy Synderman a few years ago during the Ebola crisis, she had been there in Africa and was told to do that and she would not even do it and she’s a Damn Doctor.
Nice one.
I didn’t catch that.
The title alone cost me any desire to read deeper.
LOoks like the same virus that has affected our press in the U. S., has gone global.
“My lib friends are demanding they want the borders get closed . “
Well, of course Libs would trust China more than the US...
They’re all probably fudging the facts, still I’d trust the US over China.
Most will gladly self-quarantine to save other’s lives.
But you’re right there’s always going to be some arrogant selfish b*st*ard that think’s their opinion is worth betting other’s lives on.
So quarantine them. It’s not that many, so far. It’ll grow pretty fast, but by then we’ll know more.
Maybe there are other reasons why the CDC is saying this.
Are there any reasons why the Chinese might be lying about the asymptomatic transmission of the virus?
