U.S. health officials are currently monitoring 110 people across 26 states for the coronavirus, including the five patients who contracted the deadly infection in China and brought it back to America.
The disease, which has killed at least 81 people in China and sickened more than 2,800 worldwide, isnt spreading within the community in the U.S. and the risk to the public right now is still considered low, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters on a conference call Monday.
We understand that many people in the United States are worried about this virus and how it will affect Americans, Messonnier said. Every day we learn more, every day we assess to see if our guidance or our response can be improved.
The number of patients under investigation in the U.S. has almost doubled from the 63 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said were under surveillance on Thursday. The CDC says 32 people have tested negative for the virus.
While that number is 110, we are certainly prioritizing based on [patients under investigation] that might be at higher risk, Messonnier said.
The CDC confirmed Sunday a fifth U.S. case of the virus a patient in Maricopa County, Arizona who recently traveled to Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the diseases outbreak and where the majority of cases have been reported.
Messonnier said the CDC has screened roughly 2,400 people flying from Wuhan to five major U.S. airports and is considering expanding its screening. The agency increased its travel warning for all of China, asking people traveling to practice enhanced precautions.
This outbreak is unfolding rapidly and we are rapidly looking at how that impacts our posture at the border. Were certainly considering broadening of that screening, she said.

I don’t think you’d have to worry about Vitamin D toxicity if you’re sick, unless you are allergic to it.
Keith Richards against 2019-nCoV is no contest.
His immune system will cause the virus to become extinct.

"You're both wrong.Friday, your intentions were admirable but your diary is, at best, highly misinformed regarding the immunology of a viral infection in general and influenza infections specifically, while at worst, it's pseudoscience. I was willing to forgive some of the more egregious errors (cytokines are T-cells? Nope, they're molecules MADE BY T-cells) as your diary appeared harmless, until you tried dispensing medical advice without a license. That is not only illegal but highly dangerous for the affected individual above. As for your comment about NDs, I work with many and they are great at what they do, but the best ones know their limits and don't try to practive Medicine, but Naturopathy, and would be ashamed at what you state here. Don't disgrace them with your reckless medical-advice dispensing, purportedly on their behalf, they don't need your "help.""
So at least 110 known possible carriers running around spreading the infection.
Glad I pay taxes.
China is not acting like this is a minor thing.
Politically, quarantine is a non starter.
If it works, the law suits from businesses and the civil suits from people will make election dicey.
If it doesn’t, more of the same.
So the best political stance is do nothing.
We didn’t quarantine in Ebola, we won’t for this. Sad.
I have a pretty strong libertarian bent as it comes to personal freedom, but liberty is not a suicide pact. Our country has a long history of pretty draconian quarantine procedures dating well back into the colonial period. I firmly believe that any attempt at quarantine would be met with some black-robed tyrant issuing a nationwide injunction, you would have “sanctuary districts” - no human is infectious, after all. Quarantine measures within the borders are challenging, what is absolutely beyond doubt is the president has the authority to restrict travel to or from persons or regions. There will be consequences no matter what the choice, but I choose life, and hope the president does the same.
If it’s any consolation, the reason it can spread so quickly is because it is usually not fatal. Viruses that are extremely deadly can’t go as far. It takes ambulatory sickies to be out and about in contact with others. Also, 106 deaths, although sad, is not the makings of a black death.

Is the CDC playing ‘God - the ADULT in the room’ BS?
Come on CDC, we’d like to know the states with infected people - AND the cities. We promise not to jump up and down in panic... and we resent the crap out of bureaucrats who treat us like children. YOU can handle the truth AND so can we.
Thank you all for your thoughtful replies!
Did you get a flu shot by any chance?
My Chinese renter arrived back after a month in China. She came in smiling and happy to see me and I think she was hurt when I asked her to stop about 8 feet away. At 81, I just don’t want to take chances. She said she and many others were wearing masks while waiting at the Chinese airport and while they were on the plane. She had not been near Wuhan.
Inform her the mask she was wearing was unlikely to prevent disease. It’s also caught through the eyes.
Stay away from her. And anything she touches.
Take proper precautions for sure.....and yes the flu itself is very hard for certain people and even deadly for others. I’d be staying clear of airports and public transportation if possible.
You did the right thing....and she should understand.
Death rate is not the R0 number. Which was the point of using that part of the quote.

Bank on it.
