Washington Post journalist has been suspended by the newspaper after she tweeted a link on Sunday to a years-old story about the Kobe Bryant rape case just hours after the basketball legend and his daughter were killed in a helicopter crash.
Felicia Sonmez, who covers national politics for the Post, took to Twitter shortly after the world learned of Bryants death along with eight others aboard his private helicopter which crashed outside of Los Angeles.
She posted a link to an April 2016 story from the news site The Daily Beast which carried the headline: Kobe Bryants Disturbing Rape Case: The DNA Evidence, the Accusers Story, and the Half-Confession.
The tweet generated hundreds of shares and thousands of likes as well as many comments.
Sonmez says she has received death threats after posting the tweets.
In follow-up tweets, Sonmez wrote: Well, THAT was eye-opening.
Bryant was arrested and charged with sexual assault and false imprisonment after a 19-year-old woman alleged he raped her in a local hotel room
To the 10,000 people (literally) who have commented and emailed me with abuse and death threats, please take a moment and read the story - which was written 3+ years ago, and not by me.
Any public figure is worth remembering in their totality even if that public figure is beloved and that totality unsettling.
Sonmez continued: That folks are responding with rage and threats toward me (someone who didnt even write the piece but found it well-reported) speaks volumes about the pressure people come under to stay silent in these cases.

I just don’t understand this idol worship. But I shouldn’t have said anything here, because Freeper men worship the manly men of the sporting world the way liberals worship the entertainment industry. When Roman Polanski dies, we’ll call him a rapist, and we’ll remember Whoopie’s comment that it “wasn’t rape-rape.” But Kobe, like OJ, is an athlete. So carry on with your hero worship. So sorry to have interrupted it.
Im not sure what is really angering you so much. --- I'm not at all angry. I am just direct.
Its sad that some of you are going Insane on a thread about a young girl dying. ---- Wow .... "insane". Heavy.
Your hatred blinds you from sympathy. --- Silly. I wrote, "Wish peace to the families of the dead, and may they have better days ahead." Save the hysterics.
Its an embarrassment to the board. --- Mularkey ;-)
criminal
Amen
“A 19 year old girl goes to his hotel bedroom at night for what? I do not know, only she knows.”
As I recall the story, she worked the front desk of the Hotel. Kobe called her up to the room not long after he arrived. Perhaps she knew what she was getting into, and perhaps she didn’t. It could be just as likely Kobe called the front desk with a complaint about the room and lured her up.
I don’t think casting suspicion on the girl is warranted without facts.
You need to read the evidence, bruising, vaginal tears, why not do your homework before you express an uneducated guess?
bump
As I said only she knows
The child is a tragedy. But the first thing I thought of was the rape.

Mularkey, baloney, etc.
Read the police report ... his character THEN is on blazing display!
Dude, are you serious? this is not “a thread about a young girl dying”, this is a thread about hero worship of a depraved guy that got paid millions for playing a kid’s game who is now dead because he couldn’t get to a basketball practice without taking a helicopter. Nobody is jealous. Wise up.
And what of it?
He was never convicted. She did not testify.
And why do you care so much? Did he owe you money? Did he rape your daughter? Is there a report of another assault?
The guy turned himself around.
I don’t care what you think. I don’t care all that much about Kobe. I continue to be amazed at the Christians here who wanna keep hanging on to the mistakes someone else made in the past. He made good with God, at least his priest said so. I accept that. If you cannot, that is on you.
You remember wrong. The case settled one week before opening statements. Get your facts straight. You have no right to speculate against an innocent regular person.
___________
LOL ..... you lost me there.
May I just say:
Let us simply wish peace, warm memories, and better days in the future for the loved ones of the families.
She worked for the hotel and showed him to his room.
You are too much. Kobe was an entitled sex fiend who raped a girl. I am guessing you don’t have a daughter or a sister you feel protective of.
Could be, but the part you are leaving out is that the DNA analysis showed the woman had taken more "deposits" lately than the local sperm bank.
Let’s see, juvenile argument, personalizing the problem. I read the evidence, it was a rape, I don’t like entitled sports figures, or entitled anybody.
