The first case of novel coronavirus was confirmed in Orange County Saturday, health officials said.
The Orange County Health Care Agency's Communicable Disease Control Division, which received confirmation from from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the infected person is a traveler from Wuhan, China.
The respiratory disease has sickened 1,975 people and killed 56, almost all in Wuhan.

The patient was transported to a local hospital and is isolation in good condition, according to officials.
Health officials said there was no evidence that person-to-person transmission has occurred in the county, and that the current risk of local transmission remains low.
It was immediately clear where and how the traveler entered into the country or county.
A passenger who landed at Los Angeles International Airport Wednesday night was hospitalized for a precautionary medical evaluation amid increased concerns over the viral infection.

California is a Sanctuary State, shouldn’t the Virus, which entered the Country without Proper Legal Authorization receive Sanctuary Status and be allowed to live freely without interference??? Are the Doctors and Hospitals GUILTY of Violating California’s Sanctuary Laws?
days if not weeks on surfaces.
I used to live there: granted, it was in the late 80’s/early 90’s. Was a beautiful place but the fruits and nuts had already completely infested it. Can’t imagine what it’s like now.
Airborne via airlines...the scare stories are still spreading faster than the virus.
Do surgical masks really work?
Officials address CDC confirmation of first case of coronavirus in Chicago area.
Amid the deadly outbreak of coronavirus in China thats killed at least 26 people and sickened hundreds of others, officials in the country are encouraging the public to wear surgical masks to prevent the spread of disease. Demands for the masks have skyrocketed, with many retailers unable to keep up.
But the question remains: Do surgical masks really work?
CHINA CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK SENDS COUNTRY SCRAMBLING TO BUILD HOSPITAL
Surgical masks will not prevent your acquiring diseases, said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor of preventive medicine and infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University, and the medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, to Fox News.
Rather, he explained, surgical masks are typically used by surgeons to protect their patients from their mouth-borne germs but those masks don’t work to prevent inhaling diseases, said Schaffner.
The masks, which cover the nose and mouth, are often made from a flimsy material and arent fitted to the face. In other words, spaces and gaps can form around the cheeks and edges of the mouth, making it easy for air to move in and out.

When coughing, you can feel the puffs of air coming out of the mask, he said.
That said, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently recommending anyone infected with the novel coronavirus or being tested for it to wear a surgical mask when in public. And one infectious disease physician told The New York Times the masks could block large respiratory droplets from entering your body when an infected person sneezes or coughs. These large droplets are largely behind the spread of coronaviruses, the physician said.
A more protective mask, known as an N-95 respirator, may be more effective, said Schaffner. But, he noted, a non-medical professional using this mask is likely not using it correctly, doing little to prevent the spread of illness or inhaling a disease.
The chance of the average person going into a pharmacy, wearing them correctly and for long periods of time is unlikely, he said.

If the person was on a plane and the flu is so infectious then likely everyone on the plane will get it.
How about the guy that sat in the same seat on the next flight? This is out of the bag and impossible to track?
Also, a friend who is an ID, said that the re-circulation of the air we breath on any plane, redistributes all viruses and germs carried by any/every passenger on that plane to everyone breathing that air on that trip.
Then unless everything is sterilized, the next passengers get the germ/virus bonuses left by the previous passengers for hours if not days.
Excellent. I am flying to Orange County for work tomorrow.
“I dont think folks with symptoms should go to hospitals, that will just lead to mass infections.”
Add clinics, doctors’s offices and any ER.
Thats why all this talk of closing borders and quarantine is way too late. The virus is out there circulating and we will soon know what we are dealing with.

I noticed that. The case in orange county was taken to the hospital when confirmed. For the love of Pete why? if they werent sick enough to be hospitalized leave them at home. The family is already exposed.
They are correct. An N95 has to be properly fit and tested and there is a specific way they must be put on and taken off to be effective. When used correctly they are danged uncomfortable trust me. The. when you get home and take it off you do so with your bare hands and throw it in the trash in your kitchen? please. Save your money

For 35 years, my wife was the head RN of a busy FP’s office.
The docs were advised by the local ID doc to have the receptionists tell flu patients in a flu outbreak to stay at home.
Then, my wife or one of the other RN’s over the phone, told the patients or their family what to do.
Then, they told them there was nothing they could do at the office for them. If they came to the office, they would have to leave.
One year, this failed, and everyone in the office came down with a severe flu. They closed the office for a week.
If the person was on a plane and the flu is so infectious then likely everyone on the plane will get it.
Even if they didn’t come down with the flu, they would be carriers with the virus or germs all over them and their clothes.
Orange County, California? That's a negative, bud.
