Sen. Mitt Romney said Saturday that it's "very likely" that he'll be in favor of calling witnesses in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, but won't decide until after opening arguments.
"I think it's very likely I'll be in favor of witnesses, but I haven't made a decision finally yet and I won't until the testimony is completed," the Utah Republican said, following the first day of the Trump team's opening arguments.
Asked if he thought the defense team was effective, Romney replied, "I just don't have any comments on the process or the evidence until the trial is over."
Romney, a conservative who has before expressed frustration with Trump, previously indicated that he would be interested in hearing testimony from former national security adviser John Bolton. He said earlier this month, "I would like to hear from John Bolton and other witnesses, but at the same time I'm comfortable with the Clinton impeachment model when we have opening arguments first and then we have a vote on whether to have witnesses."
Democrats need four Republicans to vote with them in favor of subpoenas for witnesses or new evidence in order to extend the trial and gather new information.
There are only maybe four, realistically, who would vote in favor of calling witnesses who could testify against the President. That short list includes Romney, relative moderates Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and endangered senators up for reelection like Sen. Cory Gardner of Colorado.

Romney, a conservative...
And CNN lost me with this after only 3 sentences...
I think he hates Trump more than McCain did.
You dont get to decide Mittens. So just go away and STFU.
The Dem’s cuck.
Romney is an attention whore
Because he’s owned by someone. Owned.
Keep digging you worm. What a weasel.
Well that’s not true at all.
He may well get to decide since not many votes are needed for a simple majority.
It might feel good to say that.
But it’s just not true.
CNN will boost Romney every chance to shoort barbs at the President.
But Romney faces a growing backlash in Utah for being so two-faced and unprincipled, which he is by nature.
SO maybe in the end he will do the right thing only because Utah voters are getting sick of him.
He’s nothing more than a rebellious teenager type.
Mitt might be the only one who wants it to drag on. I suspect the rest of the GOP caucus has no stomach for it.
#neverTrumpers hate US more than they hate Trump
The king of irrelevant RINOs speaks, whoopie. Go play in the traffic, Mitt RINO.
This weasel won’t comment because he’s still holding out hope that something will pop that he can point to as his “reason” for voting with the dems. He didn’t get that today but, there’s two more days yet.
Perhaps he will latch onto the just released video by the sleaze Parnas?
If he votes for yes, he can forget about ever ever running for president as a RINO.
His judgement is in question. The height of his success is magic underwear.
In his case, I think it’s more that he’s a jealous, mentally ill piece of garbage.
I knew he was off when he boxed Holeyfield for charity.
It was WEIRD.
It is my understanding that calling witnesses will delay the completion of this trial for months, if not years . . . due to legal complications.
Romney: That coulda been me. Shoulda been me. I should be President. Stupid voters. I'm so jealous I could spit.
