SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Former California Rep. Fortney Pete Stark, Jr., an influential Democrat whose legislative work helped reshape America's health care system, has died. He was 88.
Stark's family said he died Friday at his home in Maryland. They did not disclose a cause of death.
During his 40-year career in Congress representing the East Bay, Stark helped craft the Affordable Care Act, the signature policy change of the Obama administration. He also created the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, the 1986 law best known as COBRA, which allows workers to stay on their employer's health insurance plan after they leave a job as long as they pay the full premium.
He also pushed for a law that requires hospitals that participate in Medicare or Medicaid to treat anyone seeking emergency treatment, regardless of their insurance status.

The first openly non-religious member of Congress. Pray for his soul.
We can blame him as well as Obama.
That photo of him looks like it was taken the morning after a night of too much alcohol, and a really spicy late-night curry.
His old district is heavily of Indian persuasion and has been for years. I am not sure if that was why he lost to Swallowwell but Zoe Lofgren is from this south bay neck of the woods too. Sad to see this area go to pot , literally.
Too late after he breathed his last breathe.
He looks evil and unhappy.
Hopefully, he will experience Justice.
So Pete Stark, a hateful, arrogant atheist with a penchant for screaming at constituents... is dead.
Well.. Bye.
I wonder if he was able to keep his doctor?
Actually quotes from The Bible on here many times contradict that.
Or there would be NO reason to pray for the dead.
I think self righteousness interferes with the reading of the passages correctly to many though.
Certainly didn’t seem to be like by many of his constituents, did he?
[His old district is heavily of Indian persuasion and has been for years.]
Imagine how nasty Stark had to be to get beaten by Swalwell.
Dot. Afghans too. There’s a section of Fremont called “Little Kabul”.
Atheist’s funeral: all dressed up and no place to go.
He exempted himself from obamacare.... of course.
I wish he had lived long enough to regret the damage he did to Americans and to our health system, and to help repeal that evil law. Sadly for him, and for the rest of us, medical care in this country is not what it used to be.
Was he he arrogant, open borders jerk that made a complete arse of himself at town halls about the border wall?
