One person is dead and several are injured following a head-on crash involving a charter bus carrying Covington Catholic students, Campbell County police said.

The crash happened around 7:20 a.m. Saturday in the northbound lanes of the AA Highway at California Crossroads in Campbell County.

According to witnesses on the scene, a southbound car somehow entered the northbound lanes of the highway, striking the charter bus head-on.

"I saw a car come across the median and head toward me," said Ricky Lynn, a witness who was also driving north. "I was able to get out of the way."

The driver of the wrong-way car was pronounced dead at the scene. That driver's name has not been released.

This is not the first time a trip involving the Cincinnati region resulted in a head on collision with a wrong way driver.

[Unfortunately there was a wrong way crash in grand central parkway in queens around 6am today. People killed. Unfortunately this type of thing is happening more frequently.]

With improvements in AI and self-driving software, I expect future cars could be rigged up, by law, to stop it by the side of the road if the driver appears intoxicated or not to be paying attention to the road. Liability issues would prevent it from grabbing the wheel and continuing to the driver’s final destination.

Maybe they would even consider flying jet liners into skyscrapers. No, that would be crazy.

I live 10 miles from where this happened. I actually was driving that road 30 minutes after the crash. All four lanes were blocked and I had to detour. This is an EXTREMELY dangerous road. Fatal head on collisions are far too common. Most are drowsy or asleep at the wheel, perhaps DUI but nothing more.

Im a senior citizen. Just last week leaving grocery store and old person going wrong way entering in exit lane almost hit me head on. Entrance and exit were clearly marked. It was daytime and exir and entrance separated by concrete dividers. Some old people should not be driving.

Noted. Thank you for the courteous way of informing me.

Will await further developments.

It sounds like this was just someone entering someplace convenient instead where he was expected to. Lack of consideration rather than driver error due to intoxication, health issues, lack of sleep or inattention that triggered the fatal Covington crash.

No you could tell by look on old man’s face he didnt know what he was doing. It’s a semi rural area. People generally not inconsiderate. Plus there was a stop light for him to turn at into the parking lot.

Gee, sounds like you narrowly avoided the annoying and time-consuming aftermath of a fender bender. Glad you skipped the potential mess. It would be amusing if, after all the hoopla about AI and self-driving - it ends up being used to immobilize vehicles driven by folks like the one who almost rearranged your front end, instead of as a robotic chauffeur, due to liability issues.

Thanks but not a fender bender but a head on crash. Fortunately both of us driving slow.

“I’m actually impressed at the structural integrity of that Prevost bus. There appears to be no intrusion into either the cab or passenger compartments.”

I used to drive these for Trailways. They are very well designed and built. If the cargo doors are open you can see the frame. It’s a lattice, ladder type made from very sturdy square tubing. Welds are first rate. Considering the liability potential to the manufacturer they’d be foolish to cut any corners.

Good that you avoided a serious collision. As someone ready for an AARP card, I’m struck by how young people who rail at senior drivers don’t account for the fact that seniors aren’t just generally older, but wiser - i.e. they understand their vision and reflex limitations and generally drive slower and keep wider following distances from the vehicles in front of them.

“”You think this guy somehow knew who was in which bus coming the other way and then went full kamikaze on it?””

Sure - out of four busses, someone knew exactly what bus he would be on. It doesn’t even say he attended the march but let’s jump to conclusions anyway, OK?

It seems it’s not only the dems who have lost their minds.. Don’t we hear enough of this garbage without FReepers wallowing in it?
