BEIJING (AP) — China is swiftly building a hospital dedicated to treating patients infected with a new virus that has killed 26 people, sickened hundreds and prompted unprecedented lockdowns of cities home to millions of people during the country's most important holiday.

On the eve of the Lunar New Year, transportation was shut down Friday in at least eight cities with a total of about 25 million people. The cities are Wuhan, where the illness has been concentrated, and seven of its neighbors in central China's Hubei province: Ezhou, Huanggang, Chibi, Qianjiang, Zhijiang, Jingmen and Xiantao.

The Wuhan government said Friday it was building a designated hospital with space for 1,000 beds in the style of a facility that Beijing constructed during the SARS epidemic.

Could have been a little try out on some villagers. Got out of control. The Chinese government is run by ruthless totalitarians. They play with thousands, millions, hundreds of millions lives day in and day out. They try out stuff on small scale and big scale. After all, who is gonna stop em. They know western countries will sell their principles to make a buck in the huge chinese market

There isn’t any reason to let it go on purpose. If this even came from a lab at all, it was most likely accidental.

I think it’s just a naturally-occurring nasty. And cropping up in a huge city where people come and go from all over, it wasn’t contained to one place. Nothing was said or done for too long.

The last count I heard before Steve ended his stream was just under 900 cases world wide. I’d like to believe that’s true because that isn’t too bad - - except for those affected, of course. We have many more cases of regular flu in this country alone.
But I think the number is much higher.

Well you have seen the pic of a chick eating the bat in another posting no doubt. For sure, bats carry some nasty diseases. I’ve seen pics of aboriginals in Australia eating ground oven cooked flying foxes ( fruit bats). There was no outbreak of any diseases though.

I’ve read comments about it possibly coming from bats but researchers have stated they believe it came from snakes.
Truth is, no one’s sure where it came from just yet.

Thank you.

There’s a lot of speculation and rumors abound. Now that the virus has left China, more have access to it and can study it. Maybe someone can figure out its origins.

The main concern right now is learning how lethal it is and how long it can be spread. There are reports it’s already reached 4th generation - - the original source to a person, who passed it on to another person, and that person passed it on to another.

And on that ‘cheery’ note, I must make an exit. It’s time to get ready for bed. This night owl is fading. :-)

“Makes one wonder what the Chinese gov’t. isn’t telling us.”

Wonder if there is a secrete bio-weapons lab in the initial city and something got out.

They won’t stay there long.

The patients admitted are put on a conveyor belt. The belt goes through the attached morgue and then to a cemetery.

At that point, the single conveyor splits into several dozen that end in trenches that are continuously being dug.

A team of Bobcats fill the trenches and the final vehicle plants plastic 'headstones' for each dozen or so corpses, whose names are engraved by a computer controlled plasma cutter.

“This is sounding more and more like a germ warfare experiment gone wrong”

Seriously could be.

Coronaviridae are enveloped viruses (they ‘bud’ out of cells when they replicate, taking part of the cell membrane with them). Enveloped viruses can be ‘pseudo-typed’ (replicated in genetically engineered cell lines that express specific envelope proteins that change the receptors/targets that the virus will bind to). In this manner, you can potentially change how a virus spreads, and even what species it can infect.

Pseudo-typing alone wouldn't change the repertoire of the virus after it replicated in human hosts, but this could be overcome by genetically engineering the viral genome as well. The CDC or equivalent should definitely reverse transcribe and sequence this strain of Coronavirus. Genetic manipulation of the viral genome itself would be discoverable.

If you think governments are above experimenting with their citizens without their knowledge, think again. The US has done it more than once:

The Chinese are notable prevaricators. I think this matter is very much worse than they will admit. Maybe a 1918 Spanish Flu type epidemic

Source for the 4% please? The interactive "real-time-ish" map I used, had ~2.95% fatality rate.

If it gets into India, who knows?

But at least this is not being blamed on TheDonald.

Yet.

At the UN briefing in Geneva, a WHO spokesperson has said that it is too early to draw conclusions on how serious the outbreak is.

“We may see more mild cases as surveillance intensifies. So the issue is not so much on numbers that we know will go up,” he added.

The WHO were getting their information from the Chinese authorities, he said, citing figures from midnight which recorded 830 cases including 25 deaths.

UK government’s emergency ‘Cobra’ committee to discuss Coronovirus
The British government’s Cobra emergency committee will meet today to discus Coronavirus, according to the UK prime minister’s spokesperson.

The meeting will be chaired by Health Secretary, Matt Hancock.

Meanwhile, a letter from Britain’s chief medical officer to clinical staff warns that the “mass movement” of people within and outside China associated with the upcoming Chinese new year celebrations may “amplify transmission”.

The letter said that anyone who is confirmed as having the virus will be transferred to a Airborne High Consequences Infectious Disease centre (HCID).

According to Public Health England, there are four interim Airborne HCID centres in England.

These are:

• Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust

• Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust

• Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust

• Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

you do know this is one of the viruses associated with the common cold? It is everywhere and would not take much to mutate naturally.

My best guess is they’re downplaying the numbers drastically.

I think you're right. China's Disney World was just closed too... that's not something that's done for 26 deaths either.
