ALBANY, NY (WRGB) The man charged with manslaughter in the stabbing death of an Albany woman was set free without bail Thursday after facing a judge.
52-year-old Paul Barbaritano was released on his own recognizance.
The body of 29 year old Nicole Jennings was found dead in a Brevator St. apartment back in July of 2019.
At the time, Barbaritano was also found in the apartment with self-inflicted stab wounds, according to police.
Barbaritano was charged with manslaughter and remanded after his arraignment last year.
On January 2nd, he faced a judge and was then released on his own recognizance after recent bail reform laws that began on January 1.
According to the state Department of Corrections site, Barbaritano served two years in state prison back in 2005 for robbery.
The Albany County DAs office said in court Thursday, the prosecution served a Grand Jury notice and stated that upgraded charges may be considered for Barbaritanos case - including a second degree murder charge. The DAs office says any future release decisions would be up to the court and would have to align with the new law.
The Albany County Public Defenders Office released a statement saying: "The new pre-trial laws were designed to promote fair and equal justice and improve the safety of our communities. Because of the court's decision today, we are connecting our client with the services and treatment that he needs.

connecting someone with services and treatment is making appointments and referrals.
not forcing treatment, which is also against the law.
These people need to be bivouacked near the homes of judges and politicians.
