BEIJING (AP) — The head of a Chinese government expert team said Monday that human-to-human transmission has been confirmed in an outbreak of a new coronavirus, a development that raises the possibility that it could spread more quickly and widely.
Team leader Zhong Nanshan, a respiratory expert, said two people in Guangdong province in southern China caught the virus from family members, state media said. Some medical workers have also tested positive for the virus, the English-language China Daily newspaper reported.
The late-night announcement capped a day in which authorities announced a sharp uptick in the number of confirmed cases to more than 200, and China’s leader called on the government to take every possible step to combat the outbreak.
“The recent outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia in Wuhan and other places must be taken seriously,” President Xi Jinping said in his first public statement on the crisis. “Party committees, governments and relevant departments at all levels should put people’s lives and health first.”
Xi’s remarks were reported by state broadcaster CCTV on its main 7 p.m. news broadcast.
In Geneva, the World Health Organization announced it would convene an Emergency Committee meeting on Wednesday to determine whether the outbreak warrants being declared a global health crisis.

Great, just had 3 high level exec types go to China to shut down our manufacturing plant there. Bringing back jobs to North America. But geez who wants a virus.
I vividly recall the time in the late 1960s when I had what was called The Hong Kong Flu. Was extremely sick for weeks on end... a really miserable illness. It was also considered virtually epidemic.
My wife is headed to Taiwan for 3 months. Little scared.
Glad to hear about the jobs coming to America.....pray they stay well, on their mission.
For work, visiting? Hopefully, she won’t have to be in crowded spaces, too long/too often.

This is just really poor hygiene. If you’ve never been to China you can’t really have any idea how dirty the place is.
It started with poor food handling techniques, just like SARS did. As my Chinese wife says: “The Chinese will eat anything with legs except the table and chairs, anything in the air except an airplane and anything beneath the sea except a submarine.”
I lived in HK and China for 20+ years. This is just bad heath and hygiene practice in the markets. Many of the locals in China will not buy local products if they can avoid them because they are afraid of them. They like to shop at Walmart and Carrefour rather than local stores
Don’t need to kill people with a bioweapon, it just needs to make a large enough number miserable to impair whatever group you’re looking to impair.
And it doesn’t need to be all that effective, just force the other guys to have to alter their activity enough to be a hassle.
Possibly a bioweapon aimed initially at Hong Kong but oopsied elsewhere because unintended consequences.
But this is just speculation, albeit speculation that is in keeping with known behavior by communists like the PRC.
