Presidential contender Sen. Elizabeth Warren said on Tuesday that she would begin to forgive student loan debt on the first day of her administration, using legal tools that would allow her to bypass Congress.
The announcement, which comes just weeks before voting begins in the first primary and caucus states, adds urgency to legislation she introduced over the summer to cancel the bulk of the nations outstanding student loan debt.
That bill, introduced with Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., would forgive up to $50,000 in student debt for individuals with household incomes under $100,000. But Warren wrote in her plan on Tuesday that the U.S. Education Department already has authority to cancel student debt, and we cant afford to wait for Congress to act.
I will start to use existing laws on day one of my presidency to implement my student loan debt cancellation plan that offers relief to 42 million Americans in addition to using all available tools to address racial disparities in higher education, crack down on for-profit institutions, and eliminate predatory lending, she wrote in the plan."

Democrats dont need no stinkin Constitution!
And here we see yet another difference between Republicans and Democrats.
When a Republican candidate slips in the polls, he starts saying stupid things. Please clap.
But when a Democrat candidate slips in the polls, he (or she) starts saying dangerous things. Free stuff for everybody!
At least Bloomberg is trying to buy votes with his own money. Warren is using ours!
It is definitely rotten.

The government’s purpose in taking over student loans was to finance government retirement accounts. They did that because the tax increase that would be required is huge and politically untenable. Are you going to tax people withno retirement to pay for gold plated benefits?
IF the US Dept of Education has been delegated that power, a huge mistake was made and that authority should be revoked with legislation. It is way past time to clip the powers of bureaucrats!!!!!!
The ability of the leftists to “bypass Congress” is shrinking a little every day. That’s why they’re so desperate to prevent Trump from selecting judges for another five years.
she eliminates the debt for some and she will have a hornets nest on her from those who worked hard and paid it themselves..
every time a liberal “fixes” anything, its a failure because they dont think it thru.. its just for the vote...
Now having made very poor choices and holding a social sciences degree, paying back that loan balance is difficult? And the same lady who made that mess for you wants to rescue you from her?
Wow......
What I would have stopped was the takeover of the Student Loan program by the Federal Government. Back in the 1980s, most of it was run by private banks and such. When they had trouble collecting from the deadbeat grads, Washington stepped in to keep the banks afloat and ended up usurping the entire program. This has led to such by-products as the inability to refinance a Student Loan and other things to keep people in perpetual debt.
Case in point: A friend's daughter got Government Student Loans around 2000 at a rate of about 7%. 10 years later, when the going interest rate was half that, she tried to refinance in hopes of being able to pay them off before she retired, and was told she couldn't. Fortunately, her parents had enough equity in their home to cover the loan amount, so they paid it off, and the interest paid on the home equity loan was about 3%, which became a tax deduction for the parents as well!
Yup, always trust the person who comes to you with the line "I'm from the Government, and I'm here to help you"!
I’ll vote for her if she can waive a wand an eliminate all debt, including our country’s debt.
It's a variation on the Obama-era immigration bypass policy. In his case, if the Executive branch is charged with enforcing the immigration laws but refuses to enforce some laws, then it's as if those laws don't exist.
Likewise, Fauxahantus thinks that since the Executive branch is responsible for collecting on student debt, if the executive refuses to pursue payment, it's effectively as if the debt didn't exist.
Every time I hear the politicians talk about this it really pisses me off because I struggled to pay off my student loans way back when. And now it’s free college indoctrination for all.
Theres no delegated power for it. Progressives love Arbitrary government.
But she’s desperately trying.
She’s offering all the goodies she can think of that she thinks will appeal to the most voters so they’ll vote for the freebies, not the candidate.
“So what Warrens spending plans up to now? $70 trillion?”
These “spending” plans are actually wealth transfer plans.
Socialism on display
What I would have stopped was any progressive ever getting elected, inclusive of TR onward.
Why isn’t it a conflict of interest for her to propose using taxpayer dollars to fund universities?
But the debt will exist, and will limit the person's ability to get a credit card, or a car loan, or a mortgage in the future.
