Unfortunately, many older people who are of sound mind nevertheless become susceptible to clever scams simply because they are leading relatively sheltered lives in retirement. Who wants to tell an aged parent that they cannot use email or the telephone without supervision?

Yeah, I agree. The problem is implementation. We are not machines.

People that prey on the elderly, if found, should be publicly flogged.

Should be, but when the law brushes it off or says not my job, whatcha gonna do?

A co-worker's uncle was suffering from the on-set of dementia and co-worker was asked to tend to his uncle's affairs. This uncle lived in DC and was relatively well-off. My friend went to his condo, started checking his financial status and found that his uncle had been donating almost daily to "Police Benevolence Fund' "Firefighters in Need", "Fallen Heros Fund" and a host of others..All were checks mailed out to different addresses but ALL deposited to the same bank account in Arizona. He immediately had his uncle's phone number changed and took his checkbook away from him(no easy task) My co-worker called..DC Police, Arizona State Police, County police in Arizona and the FBI...All he got was the runaround, all said it wasn't in their jurisdiction..All in all, my co-worker spent 3 months trying to get someone to look into this but was never able to find anyone. Ended up being a 45k dent in this gentleman's finances but as I said, he was well off and lived out his years fine.

“...writing laws to end this crap.”

That won’t do it.
They need to be ID’d, tracked down and summarily executed. Zero recividism.

Try changing your “answering machine” greeting to begin with the wrong number “beep-beep-beep” tones.

We did not allow our mother to live by herself unsupervised. I am trying to tell you that some people do not want to put their loved ones into facilities. We honored our mother for her to live at her home, and we took care of her. I’m only lecturing that you cast aspersions on those who don’t want to be put into facilities.

No, it’s not as easy task, far far from that. It was sacrificing ourselves to take care of our mother 24/7/365. However, we pulled together and took turns. We got the job done.

““My mother is 76 and has early Alzheimer’s,”

Why does she have control of her money instead of her negligent, irresponsible daughter managing it for her?

My wife got a message on her cell phone from a ‘security monitor’ that her SS # had been ‘suspended’ because of ‘illegal activity’ and was possibly ‘hacked’ and to call a certain number

I asked my wife, who was believing this crap, how do they know what your cell phone number is?......................

If I ever get a call from these scammers I play along with them. I give them the name, address, phone number, date of birth, and a random Social Security number ... for my Congressman. :-P

People in these cultures laugh at us for thinking that honesty is a positive attribute. Most Americans at least feel guilty if they cheat or scam someone, though there are sociopaths among us.

It is very very hard to take care of the elderly with significant impairment. You have to rethink everything to keep them safe. It is frustrating and exhausting and you do need to take breaks. I would encourage others who are caretakers to find others who can help out, even if a small fraction of the time. I am so glad I have a large enough family that there were 3 of us who could take on most of the caregiving for Mom. Occasionally we got adult grandchildren to stop by to keep her company so that we could tend to other things. It was the best thing I’ve ever done in my life, taking care of mom those last few years. Precious precious time with her that I will always cherish.

The best way is to immediately tell the scammer on the phone, "Look, I did what you told me, there's blood all over the place, and I'm sure she's dead. Now what?

I like how you think. I’m sure the MSM will be adopting this strategy in their reporting, very soon!

If a family member knows a elderly relative may not be able to handle their own financial affairs they can request to be designated a “Representative Payee.” This is not the same thing as a “Power of Attorney.”
