The implication of your post “...and they want to have nuclear weapons” was that by shooting down the airliner they are showing that they aren’t competent to have nuclear weapons. Both we, the Soviets, and the Russians, nuclear powers, have done the same thing. That’s all I meant.

I did not mean to imply that the Iranians should get nuclear weapons. President Trump is right, they must be stopped, not because they are incompetent, but because they are evil. Iran and the world will be a better place when its current regime is replaced by the Persian people with a less crazed government.

I'm surprised, but pleased, that Iran admitted it.

There were other flights that had left successfully. From flightradar24: "There were 10 departures from Tehran-IKA from midnight local time 8 Jan through the departure of PS752 at 06:12 LT. Prior to PS752, the last flight movement at IKA was the departure of QR8408 at 05:39 local time." And other aircraft (e.g., a Luftansa flight) were on their way to the Tehran airport when the plane was shot down.I'm surprised that so many airlines allowed their aircraft to operate in such a tense situation.

The Ukranian flight took off an hour late. It's possible that if this information wasn't conveyed to the people manning the missile launchers that they checked the schedule and saw no plane was leaving at that time. It's also possible the plane's transponder was malfunctioning. But the fact that the plane was ascending should have clued them in that whatever the object was, it was wasn't attacking.

Absolute total Bravo Sierra. Those airliners have exact departure procedures they follow with exactness. In a time of tension those pilots would be more than precise in following the proper procedure. In addition those pilots would be following commands from the Iranian Air Traffic Control. That aircraft was flying exactly where it was directed to fly.

There are only two logical explanations. 1. The person in charge of that SAM missile site screwed up beyond belief. 2. Iran wanted that airliner shot down for reasons we do not know.

In addition that 737 would be "painting" a radar signature that was unmistakable from a warplane. It was climbing out and away from Tehran. Its radar signature would be huge and unmistakable. Hundred of planes probably left Merabad airport that day. Why was this one considered hostile?

The mullah’s regime is responsible for multiple crimes against humanity and crimes against the general welfare of its own citizenry. This shootdown is not one of them. It was a negligent act, a deliberate action (firing the missile) done in the wrong time, place, or manner.

There is no upside to shooting down an airliner. When the U.S. Navy shot down the Iranian airliner, we (somewhat reluctantly) owned up to it and paid appropriate damages. I suspect the mullahs realized that you can’t sweep this under the rug, and that the only way to get past it was to admit they screwed up. Now, will they step up and pay damages to the next of kin for their mistake?

Actually admitting they did it, “by human error”, is commanly done in conflicts when wrong targets are destroyed. Even we’ve done so in Syria etc.

However one would always question Iranians who could and would use the situation to attack anything.....
