Russian spy ship 'aggressively approached' US destroyer in North Arabian Sea, Navy says

A Russian Navy spy ship nearly collided with a U.S. guided-missile destroyer Thursday after it “aggressively approached” the vessel in the North Arabian Sea despite multiple warning signals, the Navy said Friday.

The U.S. Naval Forces Central Command issued a statement late Friday morning confirming the incident in which the Russian ship came dangerously close to the USS Farragut as it was conducting “routine operations in the North Arabian Sea.”

In a video accompanying the statement, the Farragut can be heard sounding off five horns, which is the “international maritime signal for danger of collision,” before requesting that the ship alter its course.

“The Russian ship initially refused but ultimately altered course and the two ships opened distance from one another,” the statement read.

U.S. defense officials told Fox News the Russian spy ship made two “dangerous” passes, coming as close as 60 yards to the American destroyer. The entire encounter lasted 10-15 minutes, according to a Navy official.

“While the Russian ship took action, the initial delay in complying with international rules while it was making an aggressive approach increased the risk of collision,” the Navy’s statement continued.

This might be news to some, but for former squids like myself, we dealt with this constantly in the Persian Gulf with the old Soviet Krivak-class destroyers shadowing us, lighting us up, and disrupting our maneuvers like underway replenishment all the time.

Funny thing is, when a USO troop visited our boat and set up their band on the fantail, the Krivak ship moved up within a about 100 years, dropped anchor, and everyone came above deck to listen to our entertainment. When the band left, the weapon systems became live again and they went back to their shenanigans.

Magnatron,

Does a DD like Farragut use any towed arrays?

The US Navy is very sensitive about collisions these days. They have a hard time avoiding containerships even. Hopefully they didn’t have women drivers this time

Yeah, that’s a fantastic idea. Let’s start sinking Russian ships. Any other bright ideas?

Or, if they do, they're all still speaking to each other.

You’re a spy ship, we’re a destroyer. Your move.

“Just sink the POS.”

No need. Russian incompetence will eventually sink it, burn it, or blow it up for us.

The Russian Navy is truly its own worst adversary.

Wow flashback to my CICO days when I did daily intel reports to the wardroom that included where all these guys in West-Pac were located. I think we called them AIGs back then...but that’s been … wow...25 years ago.

AGI - hadn’t thought about that in many years either.

When I was on NIMITZ conducting flight ops, they’d pull in front of us and throw up red over red lights to force us to stop launching/recovering.

“throw up red over red lights”

What’s that?

Getting in front of a carrier as big as Nimitz doesn’t seem like a good idea. Kind of like laying down on railroad tracks to make the train stop.

What happened to the rule that no ship may approach closer than 100 yards. If they ignored warnings what are they supposed to do send a harshly worded rebuke via bull horn to re-enforce their objections?

I need to look up the definition of national defense again...maybe I missed something

This is a cold war tactic that was encountered all the time. Some got close enought to trade paint.
