FRANKFURT - Soaring demand for SUVs drove record sales for premium carmakers including BMW and Mercedes last year, leaving the industry on collision course with government efforts to tackle global warming despite big investments in electric vehicles.
BMW said on Friday deliveries by its main luxury brand rose 2% to a record 2,168,516 vehicles last year, thanks to a 21% jump in sales of its X branded sport-utility vehicles (SUV) which now make up 44% of the BMW brands global sales.
At Mercedes-Benz, the worlds best selling premium car brand, every third luxury car sold last year was an SUV.
Automakers across the world are investing billions in electric vehicles to try to meet tougher emissions regulations. But the jury is out on how many drivers will buy them.
Consumer preferences for SUVs could offset the benefits from electric cars, the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned in its November World Energy Outlook 2019 report.
SUVs were the second-largest contributor to the increase in global CO2 emissions since 2010 after the power sector - ahead of heavy industry including iron and steel, cement, aluminum, as well as trucks and aviation, it said.
There are now more than 200 million SUVs around the world, up from about 35 million in 2010, accounting for 60% of the increase in the global car fleet since 2010, IEA data shows.

As for fuel economy, my 2015 Z51 Stingray gets around 24mpg and 6 on the track like Thunderhill in Willows, CA.
Insects and fish are responsible for most CO2 production. Termite breathing alone generates 10 times more CO2 than all fossil fuel sources combined. Obviously these termites should be capped. A good green job is gluing tiny MAGA caps on termites all day. It would keep all our useless breathers occupied rather than out causing trouble.
Interesting. Where can one verify this?
The only reason the major manufacturers have any interest in hybrids and battery-powered cars is that gives them more breathing room to sell gas-guzzling SUVs and still meet the Corporate Average Fuel Economy reg, which is where the big profits are.
Earth's crust contains 46.6 percent oxygen by weight. Instead of removing CO2 from the air via fertilizing saltwater algae, we could instead release more oxygen into the air, thereby reducing the percent CO2, as well as boosting the performance of all our SUVs.
Bingo!
todays suv’s are much more efficient and my Rav gets just a little less mgp then my camry, not enough difference to forgo the power and capacity of a rav......although, I loved my camry.....
SUV’s are all over the place. Look at the parking lots of stores. The liberals response is to make the parking slots only for small cars....
“Many, include myself bought a Corvette for track use and spirited driving mountain twisties like the Blue Ridge Parkway and Tail of the Dragon. Corvette owners dont like highway travel much since they are cop magnets.

NICE!
Sounds like y’all are having’ fun!
LOL! You don’t have explain it to me, I just had never heard about the termites before. Heck, the average “scientist” doesn’t even know that CO2 is denser than air (higher molecular weight, 44 vs. 29) and therefore sinks to the ground where the plants can process it! Green house gas my patootie!
Ah, good ol' 1973 Suburban.
yea....
it’s getting kinda old.
