RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia's Attorney General is urging lawmakers to toughen hate crime statutes.
Mark Herring is re-introducing a series of bills he hopes will address the problem in the Commonwealth.
His bills would expand Virginia's definition of a hate crime, put more restrictions on militia groups, and bar anyone convicted of a hate crime from having a gun.
Herring says with the new democratic majority in the General Assembly, he's optimistic the measures will pass.
In previous years his bills failed.
"These are all measures designed to help stem the prevalence of hate crimes and white supremacist violence that is just so disturbing," Herring said.
A report from Virginia State Police said the number of hate crimes in the Commonwealth has risen about 31% over the last six years.

The claim of 34% increase in 6 years sounds specious, since various articles including on a CBS site, say that hate crimes are down, including in Virginia. Herring had to go back 6 years arbitrarily to find a low baseline. Plus adding all sorts of gender categories to hate crimes helps increase reporting.
Will Herring’s bill define owning a firearm as a hate crime?
I’m curious as to who the claimed white supremacy groups are, who does the labelling, estimated numbers of adherents, etc. The idea that there is some sort of white supremacy explosion sure seems like a Democrat myth and talking point in search of reality.
A hate crime, as defined by current jurisprudence, is anything a White says or does, or doesn’t say or doesn’t do.
When one looks at Crime Statistics in Virginia it becomes blatantly obvious that somebody’s got to stop those CRACKAS!!!!!!

Herring believes in mob rule. He bullies his way by threat and intimidation to disarm law abiding citizens who happen to be gun owners.

Yep, hate crimes are rising in Virginia!! In Richmond, murder was up 13 percent this year over last year. How about enforcing the law against killing, Mr. AG?
