Pennsylvania has 701,000 union members out of a total workforce of 5,575,000 making a union participation rate of 13%. To me 13% is no where near a huge block. Put another way 87% of PA workers are not in a union.

A Democrat has to win Pennsylvania to win the presidency, and he or she has to win western Pennsylvania to win the state, something the party did consistently between 1992 and 2012. Clinton carried 1 county in Western PA. Obama carried 2 in 2012.
I think Al Gore was the last to actually "carry" the region.
