To his eternal credit, Richard Nixon helped end America's draft. Congress responded to his President's Commission on an All-Volunteer Armed Force by discontinuing the draft in 1973.
The United States has set an example that we should encourage other countries to copy.
The commission's report noted that the draft:
"has been a costly, inequitable, and divisive procedure for recruiting men for the armed forces. It has imposed heavy burdens on a small minority of young men while easing slightly the tax burden on the rest of us.
"It has introduced needless uncertainty into the lives of all our young men. It has burdened draft boards with painful decisions about who shall be compelled to serve and who shall be deferred.
"It has weakened the political fabric of our society and impaired the delicate web of shared values that alone enables a free society to exist."

BULLSH!T! Look up MacNamara's Morons.
You are throwing out the baby with the bathwater. One hundred percent, McNamara was an idiot, his program was a typical leftist wet dream, but the draft is unifying and good for society. It gives all Americans something to complain about, AND, here's the thing, most young men want to serve and work with other men in a demanding job, but fear the scorn of their contemporaries if they volunteer. But when they have no choice, they embrace the challenge.
Personally I have talked with many men who, looking back, wish they had joined so they could have had that common experience.
PS. Great tagline, subtle, to the point, and humorous in context.
Elaborate!
That is a point not often made but quite important. Many boys, not all, avoided the draft by ducking into school or getting married. Look how they turned out... They are now the academics who fill universities, justifying their cowardly behavior by preaching to the rest of us. And a lot of marriages ended because the young boys who married never grew up, never had a base for a solid marriage.
“AND, here’s the thing, most young men want to serve and work with other men in a demanding job,”
Maybe. But we are talking the feminized, homosexualized US Military. Soldiers in red high heels, female DIs, NCos etc.
This is another case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. No system is going to be 100% pure without a dictatorship, so we live with what is possible. Better to let a few slip through than not have one at all.
If your daughter aint goin my son aint going. End of story.
Yeah. Amazing wonders. Like in making sure there was never another Republican president ever again.
MinuteGal... Gal
We are not taking about menses here, but men.
I was drafted as ground combat was ending in Vietnam
. I dont think the draft would work so well now. With all the added technology, the learning curve would be extended a Loy further out. Draftees would have to do 4+ years to make the long training periods pay off. Half the Army would be in MOS training otherwise,
“Dec.8+ 1941 there were lines but not enough, millions more were needed”
Not true. There was an excess supply of volunteers until fairly late in the war, early 1944 I recall, when combat and non-combat casualties began to take their toll. Until then, the main function of Selective Service was to keep people *out* of the military who had a higher value in the domestic economy (farmers, machinists, etc.).
I don’t think it should be compulsory, but I do think there should be a SINGLE INCENTIVE for service UNDER ARMS.
NO MILITARY SERVICE, NO VOTE.
If some people are not willing to put their lives on the line for their country, they should not be in ANY position to put other peoples lives on the line.
I enlisted in 1968, the Selective Service was a year late trying to draft me.
The Marine Corps told them to f#ck off, they already owned me.
In the V ring at 500 meters.
Never were truer words said.
No, it wouldn’t have, some of those boys are just PUSSIES to the bone.
If we did institute the draft we would be much less likely to get involved in the stupid wars that our leaders have gotten us into since we went all Vol. The will isnt there among the populace to enslave their sons to the government.
If they “fear the scorn of their contemporaries” they are not men and will never be MEN.
I look back now at some of the sophomores who beat up on the freshmen and I realize they were not even a full year older than us. There is a lot to be said about psychological indoctrination.
