U.S. set good tone by ending military draft
Corvallis Gazette Times ^ | Jan 2 2020 | Paul F. deLespinasse

To his eternal credit, Richard Nixon helped end America's draft. Congress responded to his President's Commission on an All-Volunteer Armed Force by discontinuing the draft in 1973.

The United States has set an example that we should encourage other countries to copy.

The commission's report noted that the draft:

"has been a costly, inequitable, and divisive procedure for recruiting men for the armed forces. It has imposed heavy burdens on a small minority of young men while easing slightly the tax burden on the rest of us.

"It has introduced needless uncertainty into the lives of all our young men. It has burdened draft boards with painful decisions about who shall be compelled to serve and who shall be deferred.

"It has weakened the political fabric of our society and impaired the delicate web of shared values that alone enables a free society to exist."

It was DEMOCRATS who instituted the drafts of the 20th Century, and REPUBLICANS who ended them.

A federal government draft reflects Democrat big-government philosophy.

Sir: I was a draftee. Almost all of the members of my basic platoon were draftees. We scored the highest in all areas of any platoon in any training cycle up to that point in time. Almost all of the platoon earned expert rifleman badges.

Finally, almost all of us went to Vietnam and served with honor and made rank. I might also add, quite a number of draftees' names are on the wall in D.C.

So the answer is “NO”

Just as I figured.

Full compulsory service, ala Israel, probably would be. Lottery compulsory service that’s avoidable by seeking “education”, not so much.

“Just as I figured.”

Well, since the draft didn’t exist when I turned 18, it’s strange you would somehow “blame” me for not being drafted - or for exercising my First Amendment right to have an opinion about the draft.

The military is all about defending our freedoms including our right to free speech, isn’t it?

Any draft should be all inclusive. Medical rejection should be based on military docs. No college deferments for anything other than medical service—with required service upon certification.

Real simple. Real clear.

It is impossible to keep politics out of it. But the fewer the “rules” the more difficult it is to find a loophole.

If the draft were reinstituted, do you think any of Mitt Romney’s sons would be drafted? Somehow, I doubt it. (Recall that nobody in his family has served, even though he was an ultra hawk candidate, touting Neocon warmongering rhetoric). The draft system will always be skewed to let powerful sidestep it. Another good reason to oppose it.

Nixon got the draft stopped, de-escalated US involvement, and (my favorite) got rid of draft registration. When the moron Jimmy Carter reinstated registration, it was one of his showboating responses to the kidnapping of our embassy staff in Tehran. Registration has continued since then, through seven presidencies (inclusive on each end).

“Any draft should be all inclusive. “

You’re dreaming if you think the politicians will allow themselves and their families to be treated like the rest of us.

I did four years of military school. My arms were in great shape from push ups.

The main thing I learned was to memorize rules, and then find a way around them. It served me well in my professional life.

I am very sure it’s not for everyone.

Except as punishment for a crime, involuntary servitude was outlawed by the 14th amendment. Woodrow Wilson brought it back with his typical progressive BS.
He said that since the Congress declared war, all of the people had “collectively” volunteered.
So his draft was not involuntary servitude, it was selectively choosing from the American people... all of whom he saw as “volunteers”.

I know it’s sacred to some, but that is what it is.

And you have a screw loose to think a parent should have to send their kids to today’s military run by atheists, trannies, homos, women on the bridges of warships who won’t speak to each other, etc... all to fight neocon wars.

No thanks.

I am sure its not for everyone, but everyone could learn something from it, especially in todays youth where they all feel entitled and have little or no discipline, and many dont even have life goals much less a sense of American heritage. Anyway, its just a fantasy...

“women on the bridges of warships who won’t speak to each other”

At the risk of sounding sexist, that sounds highly plausible, but do you know of specific incidents of this kind of passive-aggressive catfighting at sea? (Fighting over dreamboat men - or women, for example?)

One of my junior high teachers (also someone I'd known before and since) was drafted I believe, and served (military intelligence); his take on the all-volunteer armed forces was, it was better to have (as he put it) "a bunch of goldbrickin' S.O.B.s" who were required to be there, when it came time to get **** done. I've cleaned this up a little. :^)

I'm sure we'd all gladly serve if the alternative is a mass-produced army of autonomous robots, because with the Demagogic Party still around, were they to get control of both Houses and the White House, one can bet that the robots won't be serving outside or even along our borders, but rather used as an occupation force here in the US.

And thanks for all you've done for all of us.

“want to equate military service with slavery/involuntary servitude, regardless of the Supreme Court’s 1918 decision to the contrary.”

The Supreme court was wrong. It was just progressive era BS. It was no better of a decision than Dred Scott, Plessy vs Ferguson, or Roberts and his Obamacare as a tax concept.

Call it what you want, it is forcing someone into servitude against their will. And today’s globalist military leaders are morally bankrupt, godless and perverted. It would be a crime to force someone to obey them.

Ahhh, yes, no draft, who needs it? We have 3M? in uniform all services. That’s fine, but what will you do when you need 14M? Run to the recruiters? LOL, 2001 there were no lines at the recruiters. Dec.8+ 1941 there were lines but not enough, millions more were needed. Its good to have prior trained former military doing reserve duties, as they can be the trainers when the balloon goes up. I was in during the draft years, I had no problems working with other draftees, most had just graduated from college and performed as expected of them. In the late 60’s, Nam days, they went with what they called Cat.5 draftees, then problems arose. The military is a great place to learn responsibility and caring for those around you. With what I see today, it should be mandatory after HS. College will be taken a lot more seriously when you get out, as you will certainly have gained a degree of maturity with the experience.
