A 5.8-magnitude quake has jolted Puerto Ricans out of their beds as the strongest quake yet to hit the U.S. territory that has been shaking for the past week.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck Monday morning just south of the island at a relatively shallow depth of more than 6 miles. There was no tsunami threat.

Several homes on the southern part of the island have collapsed. A natural arc rock formation also collapsed. Some power stations went off line. Again, all in the south.

I am in San Juan (north side of the island), was shaving at the time, and didn't feel a thing. The island is split by a high mountain range. That's probably why it was barely felt up here.

There have been thousands of small tremors over the past few weeks in the area that was hit today.

It’s way less populated there, yes?

I spent 40 days without electricity and was one of the lucky few who got power back that “early”, thanks to the stateside crews who worked in our region. It is forever appreciated.

They were happy to help.

Did you lose a bunch of weight from having no AC?
(typically sitting in the heat all day takes one’s appetite)

I lost fifteen pounds during the ordeal. Poor diet during the first week, clearing out debris, trying to keep three generators running for weeks on end (one at my house, one at my mom’s and one at my business), more whisky than I should have had...that’ll do it to you.

We take so much for granted. And I live in a modern, upscale part of the San Juan Metropolitan area. People up in the mountains had it far worse. They were on MREs for a couple of months.

We are spoiled. If my internet or power go out, I don’t know what to do. It’s funny how you start to get used to it, and the mind calms down.

Hope everyone is okay down there...take care.

A 5.8 is a pretty good jolt. It could be a foreshock.

Puerto Rico must ban fracking. That will stop the earthquakes.
