BREAKING: Iraq parliament votes to expel US military

BEIRUT (AP) — The latest on U.S.-Iran tensions (all times local):

4:45 p.m.

Iraq’s parliament has voted to expel the U.S. military from the country.

Lawmakers voted Sunday in favor of a resolution that calls for ending foreign military presence in the country. The resolution’s main aim is to get the U.S. to withdraw some 5,000 U.S. troops present in different parts of Iraq.

The vote comes two days after a U.S. airstrike killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani inside Iraq, dramatically increasing regional tensions.

The Iraqi resolution specifically calls for ending an agreement in which Washington sent troops to Iraq more than four years ago to help in the fight against the Islamic State group.

The resolution was backed by most Shiite members of parliament, who hold a majority of seats.

Many Sunni and Kurdish legislators did not show up for the session, apparently because they oppose abolishing the deal.

Perhaps Greta can fix it

I agree. Destroy everything we built; all buildings, runways, water wells, power lines, whatever. Leave that damn country just where it belongs, in the stone age. Maybe transfer all efforts to the Kurds, but then again, none of them are worth anymore American blood or treasure,

That works for me.

Let Iran gobble them up, and when they ask for help. Tell them too late you are on your own.

Your 1% die and 99% join the winning side is not supported by history. The schizm between sunni and shia is 1,400+ years old and is not going away any time soon. The ‘losing’ side always becomes the terrorists to continue the attack.

However, I do agree we should keep them in a box, but that does not require boots on the ground, IMHO. There are many other tools to accomplish this task.

I certainly hope we don’t send them a penny of foreign aid.

Obama could not have usurped the office without the assistance of the GOP.

Maybe not 99%, but close enough. How do you think Sunnis came to be 90% of the world’s Muslim population?

Shiite = Iranian lackeys

How TH did they get in control of Iraq’s Parliament??

...

They’ve always been the majority.

The British tended to control their colonies by supporting the minority population. That’s how Sunnis controlled Iraq.

How TH did they get in control of Iraq's Parliament?? Because they're the majority of the country and when we introduce "democracy" to tribal people, that's what they do with it.

I was reminded as I read recently in Dennis Prager's fine commentary volume on the book of Exodus, some people want to be led by others who decide for them and take care of their needs.

The Hebrew slaves freed after 400 years in Egypt tried more than once to revolt against Moses, preferring slave days of old to the responsibility for living according to God's Laws on their own. "Weren't there enough graves in Egypt? Why do you lead us out here?" Then they fashioned the Golden Calf to symbolize rejection of monotheism and it's responsibilities.

Iraqis will soon say "Hey when Iran swarmed over Iraq in 2020 and took us over we thought we'd get free streaming video, food and health care and not have to work. Now we hate it. Risk your lives again and free us from the Iranians. We'll wait cowering behind some shacks in the distance."

IOW, there are some Shiite members who won't be in office long.

They key is to democratize Iran. Most of the people there hate the religious dictatorship as do millions of ex-patriots.

They have been in control since Saddam was defeated. That was the whole issue with overthrowing Saddam. He was ruthless but he was a counter to the ruthless Shiites who align with Iran.

Middle East is a hot mess. The best solution is to keep them at parity and let them fight each other.

Our next move needs to be build up other nations to counter Iran/Iraq Shiites. And let them fight. And do more covert actions against Iran where we actually kill/destroy key leaders and infrastructure. Get the people of Iran to overthrow their leaders. It’s really the only good way out.

or make it a glass parking lot. But that has some drawback too. Lots of innocent people lost and the US would have fallout from that for generations.

I am not trying to qibble, but regardless of the current number split, my point of allowing them to still go after each other unabated is still valid. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

We should let Iran, which is majority shia, use its weapons and power to go after the sunni. With oil as less of a strategy issue, we would inevitably see regime change in Saudi Arabia (sunni) and many states soon would be controlled by the shia (like Iraq) even with such a numbers difference. Look at Syria. Even after years of war, the minority Alawites are still in control of the government.

Just move troops back into to Kuwait and watch the Iraqi Iranian fireworks.

These politicians have just signed their death warrant.
