A Mummers group honoring Flyers mascot Gritty was kicked out of the annual New Years Day parade in Philadelphia on Wednesday after one of its members used blackface. Froggy Carr, a wench brigade that dressed in orange-and-black colored costumes in what was apparently a motif honoring Gritty, got booted from the parade competition for best outfit design, according to NBC10 Philadelphia. The outlet caught up with mummer Kevin Hinkel, who was the lone individual confirmed to have used blackface, per NBC10.

They banned Kate Smith. Honestly, I can’t imagine any patriot supporting that hockey team ever again.

If he could just get elected as a Democrat, it wouldn’t make any difference.

For the non-Philly folk: The mummers have different divisions, the comics and the fancies. The "wench brigades" are offshoots of the comics.
The fancies are the ones everyone sees in promotional arts, the string bands with the feathers and elaborate costumes. The comics are a real mixed bag. Some are elaborately staged pantomimes with fancy costumes, others are a bunch of drunk guys who mailed it in.
These guys were wench brigades, so comics basically.

In the early 1950s, the Mummers parade used to be shown on T.V., in the NY-TRI-STATE area, and I loved watching it! The Shriners had a great band and the costumes were amazing; even seen in black&white.
Thanks for the info; I never knew that there were different divisions.

What about all the dark haired races who bleach their hair blond?
The hairy races that pluck their eyebrows and wax their legs?
Short races that wear high heels?

So a white person cannot put Flyers’ team colors—orange, white and black—on his face.
But a black person can. Now that’s racist.

Froggy Carr, doing something outrageous? Shock O’ Shocks!!!
Froggy Carr will be banned from the Mummers for just short of one year. They're 95% democrat faithful, just need a little time for this to blow over and then deny it ever happened.
Put on your big-boy pants, folks. Time to be adults.

What was/is so great about Gritty, was when he was first introduced, he was nearly unianimously ridiculed for how stupid he looks... By Philadelphians.
Until, Philadelphia caught wind that folks from other cities were making fun of him...
That’s when The City closed ranks around him, defended him, and embraced him. “F-you, the rest of the world! Philadelphia STRONG!!!”

Comics, Fancies, and Stringbands.
The Serenade, a south philly wedding thing where a few pieces of a stringband (or more) would play at a Bride’s party the night before the wedding...serenading her.
The Comics were always the minor act. They performed first. the Fancies were all about the costumes and themes. The Stringbands were about the music, costumes, and themes.
