Virginia governor’s call for 18-person gun ban force comes under fire
Washington Examiner ^ | 01/02/2020 | Paul Bedard

Excerpt:

Virginia’s pop-up gun sanctuary movement has turned its attention to fighting the governor’s call for a $4.8 million, 18-officer team to enforce his proposed “assault weapons” ban.

Two key groups issued an alert this week to push gun owners to four budget hearings Thursday around the state, asking them to quiz state legislators if they will vote to ban or confiscate weapons.

"A year after New Jersey banned the possession of unregistered "assault weapons," a grand total of 18 had been surrendered or confiscated, out of an estimated 100,000 to 300,000 guns covered by the law.

California, New York, and Connecticut met with similar success when they required registration of "assault weapons" owned before those states banned them: Only a small minority of the targeted guns, ranging from 2 percent to 15 percent, were actually registered.

Even former Vice President Joe Biden, who joins the other Democratic candidates in supporting a new federal law prohibiting the manufacture and sale of "assault weapons," concedes that the 1994 ban, which expired in 2004, had no impact on the lethal capacity of legal firearms.

In 2017, according to the FBI, all rifles combined—only a subset of which would qualify as "assault weapons"—accounted for just 5 percent of guns used in homicides where the type of firearm was specified, while handguns accounted for 89 percent. Even mass shooters prefer handguns." - Reason.com, Oct. 2019

Aks any police officer if body armor will stop a shot from a 300 win mag-a common hunting rifle. Or a 7MM Remington mag, or a 30-06. 308, and on and on.

It wont.

Isn't level 4 body armor tested against 30-06 AP rounds?

If so, there should be a steady stream of job openings.

...could not agree with you more....!! lived in Virginia for almost a half-century before moving to Texas to be closer to family... I still consider the Commonwealth to be my “emotional home”.... my, but it has changed dramatically over the past 50 years or so...I cannot believe the current Governor actually believes he can confiscate so-called “assault weapons”.....whatever that term means...!!

I lived in NORVA Fairfax County for much of the 80s and it was always a bastion of conservatism.

My sister lives in Loudan (sic) Cty. Very few white people left. They just moved to a new housing development further out which is for now mostly white.

Their old neighborhood was 95% Indian, paki, muslim and Chinese and all vote liberal. I remember 20 years ago it was nearly all white. I was in a Wall Mart this past year. I was the only white boy.

Her husband works in downtown DC. When he retires they are really moving further out-looking at W.Va.

Depends on the length of shot.

They claim it does, but I have been told it doesnt at 75 to 50 yards or less.

But, even if it does, the shock is so bad that the guy wearing it wont recover in time to do anything. The round, if not penetrated, will break ribs and all that. Body armor protects just the body mass. Such as the chest, etc. So you got legs, arms AND the head.

Imagine if a person gets leg or arm shot. Forget about the head, if the shot hit the head its all over.

BTW, even most body armor wont protect against arrows.

...Loudoun County...Virginia’s third most populated county if I recall...county seat is the charming city of Leesburg...
used to be a bastion of conservatism but goodness knows what it is like today...tremendous growth over the past two or three decades... people escaping the D.C. area and the very heavily populated NoVA area as well....

“we will get you thrown out & barred from public office under Amendment XIV, Section 3. “

Really?
When does this happen in the states that have already infringed our RKBA?
I’m baffled as to why VA’s planned infringements are such an urgent matter, but the prior infringements in several states are essentially ignored.

In NV the Dims and our new governor ignored several provisions of the state constitution in order to cram their agenda through.
I have yet to see ANY repercussions from that beyond some of our counties also doing the “Sanctuary” bit.
Since the “Laws” just took effect we will now see how many gain standing to take it to court, and how soon.

18 cops on the team now, 1,018 later. 18 won’t work, so he’ll expand it to 1,018.

Maybe it will be flying squads pointed and led by one "cop", spearheaded by 18 or more MS-13 or other gang mercenaries who are "deputized" and get paid a $200 bounty for each gun they confiscate?

I don't think they would have any qualms going door-to-door or meeting resistance. They would be more than happy to loot and murder in "self-defense" and then get let off by sympathetic courts.

18 people? Sounds to me like the governor doesn’t think door-to-door will need any more than that. In other words, there are safer, more efficient methods of confiscating weapons.
Bench warrants, court appearances, legal costs, tax liens, fines, search warrants on homes and vehicles while residents are at work...
18 people is a good start on opening a new branch of bureaucracy.

1962?

Pfft, 1933!

Go read the ORIGINAL NFA-34 bill, the intent was registration and more of ALL civilian firearms.
It got “Watered down” to just MG’s, Silencers, SBR/SBS, AOW.
But the original intent has never gone away, only the time frame has been extended.
Hardly anyone even thinks of objecting to the NFA-34 anymore, after all, it’s “Long settled law”.
How long after the next draconian unconstitutional infringement before it too is unquestionable as “Settled Law”?

BTW I still maintain this is an expensive distraction from the pro-abortion bills that they are going to drop on January 8.

The PP money that bought McAuliffe (and his protege Lt. Gov. #MeToo) is astounding.

McAuliffe, knowing Gov. Coonman's goose is cooked, is using him to sockpuppet the distraction, likely with a promise of a post-Coonman jerb. But at the end of the day all of them are going to regret using this diversionary tactic.

But you all need Chatsworth or someone on Fox to pull the curtain back past Coonman; reveal McAuliffe pulling the levers to position himself for 2024 vs Pence; and drive this down McAuliffe's throat like a lump of poison. It's never too early to be nailing this dude with yet another negative that will stick.

What is the gun owner going to do with 12 extra rounds?

Guess that leaves a few extra for the nice double tap.

My guess is that these 18 (wow! What and army) Gestapo enforcers will confine themselves to the “safer” northern climes of leftist control, like Fairfax County and surrounding areas. They’ll do this as a “Sabre rattling” threat.
