• Today photos emerged showing the scorched interior of the embassy's secure entrance after it was set alight

This militant obviously doesn’t know much about the embassy. I visited it back in late 2015. It is a sizable complex, with multiple reinforced buildings. Each building has multiple passive protection measures (reinforced concrete walls, thick bulletproof/shrapnelproof windows, etc.). Whatever he was told, this was not a serious effort to seize/capture the embassy.

I suspect that they were trying to either embarass the U.S. or more likely, get one or more of the “demonstrators” killed. With the objective to aid Iran in taking attention off of the regime’s massive repression and economic failures.

Killing them in this context would have given the mullahs what they wanted.

They were also hoping that our media would eviscerate Trump and create a gigantic failure over his head. Their timing was off as the major Trump haters of journalism (and the DNC who writes their talking points) were off for the holiday so the response from the “Orange man bad” crowd was muddled at best.
