Some Amazon third-party sellers sell second-hand products as new on the sitesome even claim to sell products they found while digging through garbage dumpsters.
The Wall Street Journal set out to test their claims by setting up an Amazon storefront and gathering some trash.

I’ve bought quite a few great American made items through Amazon.
Easily solved > don’t buy from 3rd party sellers.
.. and/or make sure that the item is ‘fulfilled by Amazon’
I do not buy a single thing through Amazon or any of its vendors. Zero. 100% boycott. Try it, it’s easy
“Fulfilled by Amazon” just means it was stored in their warehouse for a fee. It doesn’t guarantee anything else.
My experience is that if a 'fulfilled by' product needs returned, there's absolutely no hassle or delay in doing so.
I drop a return off at UPS in town and the funds are back in my account by the time I get back to the house.
It only took a couple sour 3rd party transactions to figure that out.
I did, but my purchase is ok considering the age. I wound up buying a book called “The Fabulous Leonard Jerome.” I’m pleased with it so far.
I find many good used and new books for a very good price on ebay.
Seriously, I've only had a couple of problems that resulted in me returning defective/questionable items.
I had no idea they where re selling stuff like ebay
One of my concerns about third party sellers is does Amazon give them your credit card info or does Amazon handle the transaction?
Steve Miiler: “Your cash aint nothing but trash”
I like buying from Amazon. And eBay. It’s easy.
Kohls stores also will take amazon return packages too.
Another one was a Mopar made in USA IAC valve for a throttle body on a Jeep.
I open the box and its stamped Made in China right on it.
Back it went!
So then, I paid $20 more for one from a local dealer.
The box said made in USA but....the part had made in Mexico stamped right on it.
Maybe they got it from Amazon?
Well, it worked fine so....kept it.
You are cutting out a lot of American small businesses who sell on Amazon, when you do that.
I’ve bought scores of items on Amazon, over more than a decade. Only once was I really disappointed in an item I received - batteries that were spoiled - and only a few times did I have trouble with shipping/delivery. Returns and exchanges have been easy.
(The advice upthread to avoid buying from 3rd party sellers is useful. Reading reviews carefully also helps to avoid fake merchandise or sleazy sellers.)
Somebody tried that on my on Ebay, too.
I know Squire Strat pickups when I see them.
Of course he used a fake picture of real pickups. I think I was trying for Mexican Strat pickups (cheaper but better than Squire).
I complained to Ebay and got my money back. Many, many years ago.
Amazon handles the transaction & doesn’t give your cc info to the seller— which is why I prefer Amazon rather than 1000s of individual online retailers who’ll have your cc info long after you’ve made that one purchase.
Amazon also has a PayPal option. If you just get a PayPal account, you can use that on Amazon & 1000s of other sites, with only PayPal knowing your cc number.
It’s best not to use debit cards— hackers could drain your bank acct.
My understanding is that it’s entirely in house with Amazon.
My bank statements always show the charge as being to Amazon.
The above applies to the ‘fulfilled by’ items in my experience.
The couple times I’ve ordered something that’s ‘sold by and ships from’ 3rd parties, the items have been charged (by my bank) to the 3rd party outfit’s name.
