Ambassador and staff evacuated as Iraq protesters attack US embassy (in Iraq)
The Independent (UK) | December 31 | Borzou Daragahi

Posted on 12/31/2019 2:06:22 AM PST by PghBaldy

US embassy staff and the US ambassador in Baghdad have been evacuated, according to two unnamed Iraqi Foreign Ministry officials cited by Reuters, as hundreds of Iraqi protesters swam the embassy compound.

Iraqi supporters of a powerful Iranian-backed militia were attacking the outside of the fortified zone that surrounds the US embassy compound in Baghdad, protesting against American air strikes that killed 25 fighters from the group, news agencies reported.

Thank you.

Iran fights by proxy. A cruise missile on the gov’t in Tehran would show them we will not fight their proxies, but hold the mullahs responsible.

No boots on the ground required.

Oh no, it is not at all distinguishable as blue or red, it is all about the green. And green is absolutely bipartisan.

So, eliminating saddam hussein didn’t turn the iraquis into peaceful, civilized people?

The Iraqi government will be held accountable. We provide billions of dollars in aid and assist Iraqi security forces in preventing the resurgence of ISIS.

We should also be questioning the military actions we recently took in Iraq and Syria. These demonstrations are in response to those attacks. I question Trump’s political and military leadership that recommended the military actions without notifying the Iraqi government and failed to anticipate the subsequent demonstrations following the military actions.

My fear is that Trump is being sucked into a widening conflict by Deep State. Neocons like Rubio and Graham are beating the war drums.

What’s an “ordinary Iraqi?” Are they the same mythical people who were supposed to welcome U.S. troops as liberators in 2003?

That was my experience in 2003 - hundreds of Iraqis running out to the streets to thank us. It was also my experience for most of 2004 except for when we swept Fallujah.

In 06, 07, and 08 when I was there, people were begging us to clear Ar Ramadi like we did in Fallujah.

I've talked to countless Iraqis grateful for our presence, and ousting Saddam, and literally BEGGING us not to drawdown troops because Iran and Al Qa'ida/the Islamic State of Iraq (precursor to ISIS) would take over. But, your first hand experiences may differ.......

If so, I'd love to hear them.

I also have a close business partner and friend from iran. His family got out when the Shah was being ousted. He ended up in Germany at age 15. After graduating from a university, he played in the European United States Football League as a linebacker. Then he built a tremendous oil trading business in Amsterdam right next to Royal Dutch Shell HQ.

Now he resides in Italy, retired and happy. He visits the US a couple times a year. He loves America. He knows the US has political problems and he knows the forces behind it.

He has shown me his family’s photo albums and newspaper scrapbooks. It shows Iran was once a rich country with a thriving middle class, better than Venezuela before Hugo Chavez.

The people and towns were not radicalized, not obsessed with Islam. They were very much into living a good life with good roads, universities, hospitals, homes very much like suburban homes in the US.

They had good farms allowing for self-sufficiency able to feed themselves. Girls walked around in short skirts without fear. Most families had at least one car.

None of the above exists now. The current regime retaliates and lies like our Pelosi-Schiff-Nadler democrats here. But the people there are waking up, the truth is getting through. They are getting armed and their organizations are getting smarter and stronger.

My friend, although secular, called me last week from Italy to wish Merry Christmas. He keeps in touch with many Iranians going back to inside Iran. He’s very optimistic, says Trump is making huge lasting differences so much so that Iranians have adopted ‘MIGA’ Make Iran Great Again. He says the current regime will be gone soon as the people there are smart and know what they’re doing..

“The Iraqi government will be held accountable.”

Any cut off in aid from the U.S. will make the Iraqi gov’t even more dependent on Iran. Right now, they are trying to play both sides.

“We should also be questioning the military actions we recently took in Iraq and Syria.”

It was a legitimate decision. Kataib Hezbollah (IRI) has been building up munitions in both.

“American officials have blamed the group for attacks like one on Friday on a base near Kirkuk, Iraq, that killed a US civilian contractor and injured four other US service members.”

“US officials said the five targets included three Kataib Hezbollah locations in Iraq and two in Syria. Those locations included weapon storage facilities and command and control locations that the group uses “to plan and execute attacks on OIR (Operation Inherent Resolve) coalition forces,” according to the Pentagon.”

> “Maybe you do not understand the history of US foreign policy, promising groups that rise up against their oppressive governments all sorts of US assistance, and then leaving them high and dry in their moment of need. “

You think the Iranian people are stupid and can’t understand US politics.

I assure you they are not stupid and do indeed understand the forces in US politics. In fact many Iranians understand US politics better than Americans because this is not their first rodeo. What’s been happening in the US has been happening worldwide affecting societies before the left took hold in the US in the 1960s.

I suspect that the Christian population of Iraq that has left the country since the US invasion would have a different opinion. In 2003, the Christian population was 1.5 million, now it is estimated at 500,000. We don’t have to be there, or have been there, to realize that whatever the noble aims of the war and the tremendous sacrifice of our troops and the American taxpayer, the invasion was a disaster. I have only been to perhaps 60 of the world’s 200+ countries; that doesn’t mean I have to profess ignorance of the remaining 140.
