Ambassador and staff evacuated as Iraq protesters attack US embassy (in Iraq)
The Independent (UK) | December 31 | Borzou Daragahi

Posted on 12/31/2019 2:06:22 AM PST by PghBaldy

US embassy staff and the US ambassador in Baghdad have been evacuated, according to two unnamed Iraqi Foreign Ministry officials cited by Reuters, as hundreds of Iraqi protesters swam the embassy compound.

Iraqi supporters of a powerful Iranian-backed militia were attacking the outside of the fortified zone that surrounds the US embassy compound in Baghdad, protesting against American air strikes that killed 25 fighters from the group, news agencies reported.

Destroying all classified documents. Helicopters should be dispatched soon to evacuate remaining personnel.

I don't think American leaders of any ilk understood Islam back in 2001. Bush isn't particularly bright, but he was also under the influence of his father and Dick Cheney who believe--idealistically--the democracy was the desire of all living beings.

I think it was a surprise to all our leaders to realize that democracy/freedom cannot coexist with Islam.

At least Saddam kept Islamic radicals under control. At least he kept Christians in Iraq relatively safe.

This is all organized by Iran.

The same Iran who is responsible for the majority of our troops’ deaths in Iraq via IEDs. Iran supplied them and the training to plant them.

The same Iran that seems to do whatever it wants on the world stage and the EU bows down to them.

The day is coming when Iran will need to be dealt with militarily and they deserve no mercy.

> Saddam Hussein was the only thing that kept Iraq stable. <

The two greatest threats to radical Islam were the Shah of Iran and Saddam Hussein. Carter got rid of the Shah, and George W. Bush got rid of Saddam.

Do the Islamists have some kind of meritorious service award? If so, Carter and W should each get one.

You’re absolutely right. One good thing about Saddam, the Shah of Iran, and some of the other military dictators in the Mideast is that they recognized women had rights in society, that religious minorities deserved protection, and that Islamist extremism was a threat to them and could not be allowed to obtain power. Thus, it was idiotic that Cheney believed that Saddam was in cahoots with AlQaeda, they were far more of an immediate threat to him than to us. I don’t think GW Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld or the lot of them here had the slightest appreciation for this and as usual, out touted CIA was a total flop; they relied on the opinions of exiled crooks like Ahmed Chalabi who had no public support in Iraq. The result was that a public opinion poll in Iraq a couple of years after the US invasion of Iraq showed that the US had all of 2 percent public approval for what it had done.

If global progressive causes are not dying, how do you explain the UK elections?

The Iranian people are actually wonderful people. They are secular but forced to comply under a regime they hate.

The Iranian people are not going to drive a thousand miles to Baghdad to protest at the US Embassy.

Iranians walking in the streets of Baghdad are not suddenly going to get the idea to throw a protest party at the US embassy.

The UK Guardian lefty reporter is not on the scene by accident.

What is behind this? Who is behind this?

Is what they have now, at the cost they suffered, really better than what they had under Saddam?

Or perhaps “democracy” for these countries was just a ruse for war. That makes more sense to me when you consider the same Establishment, yes, Deep State, used the religion’s (obvious) incompatibility with democracy as their excuse to keep Iraq locked in war with Iran and otherwise supporting strongmen in the region for the decades preceding.

That is a single battle...not the war.

If you think progressive causes are dying, how do you explain Bernie or Lizzie Warren or the Democratic Party? Or China? Or the media and/or nearly all academia (K-12 and universities) in the U.S. and UK. Or ALL major cities in the U.S.

Do you honestly think the cause of communism in the world is going to toss in the towel because the UK withdraws from the EU?

Progessivism/globalism/communism is Satanism.

Do you think Satan is going to say "uncle" at some point?

In the U.S. and the UK, progressivism has vast control of many institutions. In fact, progressivism in the UK has used unchecked immigration of Muslims to basically drive Christianity out of the public sphere. Most people would admit that the UK is no longer a Christian nation. Most people would say that the UK is irretrievably lost to progressivism.

Thank God that the UK is withdrawing from the EU. This is a victory...a step in the right direction.

But don't mistake this as the death of progressivism.

You are blind.

Iran’s reach is via proxies....like Hezballah and other Shiite organizations.

Iran is funded by their oil sold to the EU and Obama’s release of their frozen assets.

Iran is working with the global communists (Democrats) to divide up the world between them. The communists and islamists will fight for global domination once all freedom is wiped away....especially the US.

They are all tied together in this, but Iran is one of the architects behind the scenes.

The people of Iran will never trust the west. We have broken too many promises to support them and we have failed to reinforce their desire for freedom from Islamic control.
