Libya conflict: Turkey troop deployment bill sent to MPs

Turkey is allied with Libya's UN-backed government, which is based in the capital, Tripoli.

The move, which comes earlier than expected, marks an acceleration of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's plans.

The Libyan government has been fighting an insurgency by forces under Gen Khalifa Haftar based in eastern Libya. The forces of the warlord - who is backed by Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and others, including what is believed to be a force of Russian mercenaries - have been trying to capture the capital city.

The Tripoli-based government receives aid from Turkey, Qatar and Italy.

The bill will be debated on Thursday, though it is not clear when the law will be voted on. It is expected to be passed as Mr Erdogan's ruling party is thought to have enough support in parliament to have the motion approved.

The bill allows for the deployment of non-combatant troops, to act as advisers and trainers for the Tripoli government forces against Gen Haftar.

Mr Erdogan previously said Turkey was ready to send troops to Libya if such a request was made by the GNA.

General Haftar, who is seeking to take over the Government in Libya, is on our side, and that of Egypt.

His forces cleared ISIS out of the Eastern oil fields, that they were using as their cash cow, and as their alternate command post, as they were being driven out from Iraq and Syria.

The Turks are supporting the jihadis against the West - ISIS,the Muslim Brotherhood, and whatever other names are currently in fashion for their groups.

As some jihadis get driven back in Idlib Province in Syria, the Turks may seek to shift some of them to Libya, as well as supplying all the weapons and ammo, to try to prevent the consolidation of control by a pro-Western (anti-jihadi) Government in Libya.

This surrogate struggle was going on before the Benghazi “consulate” disaster - only the Obama Administration was (covertly) on the side of the jihadis.

Khalifa Haftar's yearlong Tripoli offensive against the Ankara-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) began to collapse. Believed to have been supplied to the Libyan strongman as early as last year by his backers [Iran's stooges] in the Gulf, the Russian system was meant to be used as a trump card against Turkey's combat unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) air interdiction operations... Analysis of open source data has estimated that up to 9 Pantsir units were lost in quick succession to UAV strikes during May, with footage of the strikes going viral on social media. To add insult to injury, a tenth Pantsir system was dramatically captured by GNA forces, and to great fanfare paraded through Tripoli as a war trophy. It is speculated that the captured Pantsir's final fate is to be picked apart for intelligence purposes.
