Daughter of Deacon Shot and Killed During Church Service Speaks Out

Anton "Tony" Wallace's daughter says she ran to her injured father

The daughter of one of two victims shot and killed Sunday morning at West Freeway Church of Christ is speaking out.

“You don’t think it’s going to hit home and the fact that it hit our home and someone that supports us and loves us and is our dad [is gone], that’s what hurts the most,” Tiffany Wallace said.

Wallace not only lost her father Anton “Tony” Wallace Sunday morning, but the 64-year-old was taken feet from her and in their house of worship.

“It just happened so fast,” she said.

Wallace was a husband, father, grandfather and a registered nurse.

He was also a deacon and lifelong member of West Freeway Church of Christ.

Wallace said her dad had just given out communion in the back of the church when she noticed a man she’d never seen before approach him.

"The guy just stood up from the pew, turn toward my dad and I guess he shot at the security guard,” she said.

Through the shots and chaos that ensued, she realized her dad had been hit.

“I ran toward my dad and the last thing I remember is him asking for oxygen and I was just holding him, telling him I loved him and that he was going to make it,” Wallace said.

He was rushed to the hospital, but it was too late.

“You just wonder why? How can someone so evil, the devil, step into the church and do this,” she said.

With few answers, the family can only remember the man who was steadfast in his faith and family.

“He was amazing. He was a godly person and even when we talked about going to heaven he always said, 'I’m always prepared,'" she said. “But you never thought this would happen.”

Yet even in her grief, the 32-year-old has found that forgiveness exists.

“I forgive him [the gunman] and that’s the hardest thing to say,” she said.

Wallace has expressed gratitude for the armed church member who also serves as a security guard for the parish for bringing down the gunman.

“He is a hero to me,” she said. “I’m just glad everybody’s OK. I know my dad is up there with his sister, his parents, in a wonderful place. Not in pain anymore… He’s just in peace now. I know he’s in good hands.”

Wallace also wanted to thank a nurse who was present and ran to help the injured and the entire congregation for their support and prayers.

Didn’t this just happen this Sunday morning? Today?
If one of my parents had just been shot to death, I would not have been in any shape to give interviews for a long time.

Of course, being the daughter of a reverend, she may be accustomed to people expecting her to say something appropriate at any given time. Some may be looking to the bereaved family for guidance even now.

Moment hero ‘former FBI agent’ shot dead gunman who opened fire inside a packed Texas church | Daily Mail

A source told CBS it was a former FBI agent, now part of the church’s security, who shot and killed the suspect.

The security team has been in place at the church for at least a decade, according to sources. Minister Jack Cummings said: ‘They saved a lot of lives today because this thing would have been a massacre otherwise.

‘He was immediately hit by one of our marksmen. The next thing I know, he was lying on the floor.’

From the Fort Worth Star Telegram:

Listen to your instincts. Listen to your gut feelings and do something right then. I have been wrong more times by not listening to my instincts than my instincts have ever been wrong.

Arreola said she couldn’t concentrate when the man was sitting behind her.

“I should have listened to my gut,” Arreola said. “While he was there, I couldn’t sing. I couldn’t pray. There was just something not right about him. But at the same time, I thought that maybe I was being too hard.”

Arreola said that she wanted to provide a good example for her young daughter. The 7-year-old is now asking questions that neither one of her parents can answer

It has to be a hard loss, the immediacy of it, the irrational unexplainable reason for his death. And has tough as this loss has to be, he may have saved others today.

“Today our home was invaded by evil’: Senior minister of West Freeway Church says”

I saw the statement by the Pastor. He did an amazing job. God bless him.

It was apparent in the video that numerous Church members were suspicious of the shooter. The first man shot definitely knew something was up. That’s probably why he was sitting so near the perp, watching him. The man who ultimately killed the shooter looked to be interested in the perp, also, from the beginning of the video. The perp raised a lot of attention.

“people that had to go through it- but it was only 2 seconds”

After the fact. At the time the seconds after the gun play were uncertain and perhaps the most terrifying of all.

But I get your general point.

God protect the man who took down the shooter.

You know that the left will be after him. How dare he stop a mass shooter. The left gets their power from mass shooting incidents.

Who did it?

Can there ever be a reason other than pure evil?

I’ll have a conversation with a former associate tomorrow morning. One of the first things he will reassert is the need to confiscate guns. Once more, I will say that I fear this sort of thing a lot less than I do the gooberment without an armed population.

Sad, very sad.

I’ve read (but haven’t seen confirmation) that the guard who fired on the shooter was a former FBI agent. If so, it could account for his accuracy in the situation.

whoever, he was a cool cucumber, a great shot, and knew what to do once the perp was down.

“Arreola said she could tell that one of the members of the security team was concerned about the shooter because he sat in the back right near him.”

A Star-Telegraph report from a witness sitting near the perp.

Speaks to the bravery of the men who were suspicious and ultimately lost their lives trying to protect the Church.

“He was amazing. He was a godly person and even when we talked about going to heaven he always said, 'I’m always prepared,'" she said.

God is sovereign over life and death. There are no coincidences. He knows every life taken and this was their turn to pass on.

Why does He allow it? There are reasons. Perhaps to illustrate there is truly no "safe space" in this world, only in the world that is to come. Mr. Wallace (and I suspect the other man that was shot first) were spiritually prepared for this day. For the believer, death is but a transition not an end.

His daughter seems to understand this.

Thanks- It’s just shocking how quickly the whole thing happened, how quickly people’s lives can be upended forever, because some scumbag can’t get along with others and turns to violence- Sad that sin had to enter the world and cause so much heartache and misery for so many people around the world and through time

absolutely, and people will have to live with fear and anxiety now forever likely- I just meant the actual gun battle only took 2 seconds- and to the gunmen and those drawing their weapons while it was happening, the battle probably seemed like an eternity- time during stressful situations sometimes seems to slow down- as the person becomes hyper-aware, hyper alert, and trying to do something to help but thinking like it is taking ‘so long’ to do so-

Another FR provided article had Biden saying that he opposed armed persons in churches, etc.

Read it and see how he just ended his political career re the brave actions of this “guard” in the church who sacrificed his life but saved those of other attendees by being armed and killing the assailant.
