Inside the Biggest 2020 Advertising War (of Michael Bloomberg) Against Trump
New York Times ^ | December 29, 2019 | Jeremy W. Peters

Posted on 12/29/2019 1:59:53 PM PST by karpov

Michael R. Bloomberg is trying — his way — spending millions each week in an online advertising onslaught that is guided by polling and data that he and his advisers believe provide unique insight into the president’s vulnerabilities.

The effort, which is targeting seven battleground states where polls show Mr. Trump is likely to be competitive in November, is just one piece of an advertising campaign that is unrivaled in scope and scale. On Facebook and Google alone, where Mr. Bloomberg is most focused on attacking the president, he has spent $18 million on ads over the last month, according to Acronym, a digital messaging firm that works with Democrats.

That is on top of the $128 million the Bloomberg campaign has spent on television ads, according to Advertising Analytics, an independent firm, which projects that Mr. Bloomberg is likely to spend a combined $300 million to $400 million on advertising across all media before the Super Tuesday primaries in early March.

Those amounts dwarf the ad budgets of his rivals, and he is spending at a faster clip than past presidential campaigns as well. Mr. Bloomberg is also already spending more than the Trump campaign each week to reach voters online. And if the $400 million estimate holds, that would be about the same as what President Barack Obama’s campaign spent on advertising over the course of the entire general election in 2012.

The ads amount to a huge bet by the Bloomberg campaign that there are enough Americans who are not too fixed in their opinions of Mr. Trump and can be swayed by the ads’ indictment of his conduct and character.

None of these assumptions are safe in a political environment that is increasingly bifurcated along partisan lines

Bloomberg's net worth is $56 billion. Trump is rich but not that kind of rich. If a billionaire politician can spend unlimited amounts on his own campaign, I think his opponent should be able to accept large donations. Political contribution limits should be raised.

I don't know if Bloomberg is genuinely running for the Democratic nomination or if this is his way to funnel huge contributions to the Democratic candidate.

Ideally the government would be small enough that no one would want to spend billions of dollars to control it, but that ship sailed long ago.

Bloomy has about as much of a chance of EVER being president as I do, has almost NO following at all, and wants to rule the world...he has a Napoleon complex!

OTOH...he has more money than brains and he's really just throwing it away on this run. He'll get nowhere, but shall, in all probability back the DEM nominee.

If MiniMike is spending his money on ads on Facebook and Google, the guy is carrying coals to Newcastle. He’s either a serious candidate who knows even his base can’t stand him. Or he’s a stalking horse for someone else and is using those ad buys to scare other candidates into overspending themselves into earlier political graves, leaving a clearer path for whomever MiniMike is aiding.

Either way, no threat to Trump.

Nanny’s plan is to get enough delegates to negotiate the Vice Presidential nomination for himself, spend billions on the general election campaign and then, if successful in the general, have Hillary contact her Suicide Hotline. Sadly, and inexplicably, the DemocRAT President-elect commits suicide and Nanny becomes the President-elect and names Hillary as his Vice President. Bloomberg orders a tripling of his a Secret Service protection and supplements it with his private guards. /s

It's not your vote he's looking to get. It's a play for the black vote, which is probably 1/3 of the Democratic primary vote in TX, once you take out all the illegals and non-citizen legal residents. Blacks really hate the NRA, with 80% being against it. The thinking is undoubtedly that, thanks to the NRA, their criminal relatives and friends risk being shot by wypipo while trying to earn an honest living via armed robbery or merely punishing slights to their honor (i.e. dirty looks or snide remarks for cutting in line) by people of pallor. Quinnipiac poll that includes NRA approval numbers:

44. Do you think that the NRA, or National Rifle Association, supports policies that are good for the U.S. or supports policies that are bad for the U.S.?

Bloomberg's net worth is $56 billion.

A retired person can conservatively spend 4% of their net worth every year and not run out of money. At 4% Bloomberg can blow $2.24 billion per year, for life. At his current 77 years of age he could get away $5 billion. That's a lot of kimchi. When someone has that kind of loose pocket change, the next thing they want is power. As annoying as a President Mini Mike would be, he's probably the only Democrat running that would do the least damage to the economy.

I have seen ONE of his commercials that it. I watch tv and am on Facebook and other platforms and have seen nothing. He is not getting his money’s worth as far as I’m concerned.

Now Styer is another story. I’ve seen his lame commercial numerous times and he’s always complaining on Twitter in an advertisement format. I don’t follow him so what I see is paid by him.

>>It’s not your vote he’s looking to get.<<

But it is my vote he needs. Just like in most of the USA, blacks make up about 12% of the vote and our state is winner-take-all for EC votes.

So for POTUS purposes, the black vote is not much help. And rumors of Texas turning purple are absurd. We just have pockets of REALLY deep blue.

Throw enough advertising at people and it pisses them off.

It’s not your vote he needs to win the Democratic primary. I don’t think he’s under the illusion that Democrats can win TX in 2020. But to win the nomination, it would help for him to win the TX primary.

For Bloomberg, the big hump is winning the nomination. If he gets it, he’s got an even chance of beating Trump, because he’s the most right-wing of the Democrats, and will siphon up moderate and independent voters. His billions will drive his moderate message home. I don’t like any of the Democrats, but I despise Bloomberg the least, because he is actually middle-of-the-road (except on gun rights and restaurant soda sizes), a sharp cookie and unpolitically-correct in the way he went about governing NYC.

LLary outspent the President 2 to 1.

But Trump had $5 billion worth of free progressive media advertising, 99% of it negative character assassination. Who could lose with an anti-endorsement like that?

It’s a reminder that Bloomberg’s tsunami of cash is fueling ads aimed at driving down Trump’s poll numbers. Like it or not, people in the wish-washy middle drive election results. 2020 will not be a cakewalk, and Trump voters should evangelize, evangelize, evangelize.
