SACRAMENTO A Cambodian refugee who drew support from immigrant groups was released Monday from a California prison after being granted parole in a murder case, then immediately turned over to federal agents for possible deportation, his attorney said. Gov. Gavin Newsom allowed the parole of Tith Ton, now 40, who spent 22 years in prison for killing a rival gang member.
Its deeply disappointing that the governor is choosing to work with ICE, said Anoop Prasad, an attorney with the Asian Law Caucus. Its an unjust and illogical practice that is tearing apart communities in California.
Immigrant rights groups want Newsom to end policies allowing the transfer of prison inmates to federal authorities despite Californias efforts to provide a sanctuary for immigrants.
Prasad argued that Ton had turned his life around in the past two decades and become a substance abuse counselor. In approving his release, Newsom must have agreed that Ton no longer poses a danger to the community, Prasad said.
Newsoms office didnt comment other than to confirm that he had allowed the parole.
We followed normal procedure, corrections department spokesman Jeffrey Callison said of Tons release.
Dozens of people rallied last month on the lawn of the state Capitol in support of Ton and others from Southeast Asia who face possible deportation.
The groups want Newsom to end a corrections department policy of notifying immigration officials of impending releases after the agents file detainers or present an arrest warrant.
A 2017 California law bars local and state agencies from cooperating with immigration authorities involving cases against those who have committed certain crimes, mostly misdemeanors. The rights groups say it also applies to the state prison system.

Daily life in 3rd World Occupied California.
bm
The key to this story is he is a murderer and was released. He should have been executed years ago.
Headline says “immigrant”, body says “refugee”. Yet he is detained by ICE, which implies he is an illegal alien.
The left has completely and deliberately obscured the English language in regards to illegals. Which has given them much leverage in this debate because liberals are stupid, semi literate (at best) and are incapable of comprehending the difference between an immigrant and an illegal alien.
Its California..our tax dollars go to feeding these lowlife scum til they are too fat to move
No sympathy. If here illegally, out you go. Immigrant rights group, my a$$.
He’s a killer, you idiots.
Yeah, and that's just their career politicians.
California does not come close to being a 3rd world country, 5th or 6th world maybe (on a good day) but not 3rd World.
maybe we got lucky and he killed a bunch lifers in prison. probably not, but it sounds nice
i wonder if the guy he killed was a US citizen.
Hey they love abortionists...
If I recall correctly when looking up this criminal record, he’s got 9 felony convictions including sexual assault, weapons charges and of course, murder. If he had been deported when first convicted as he should have been, a family wouldn’t be short a son today.
A guy gave me a bumper sticker, now on my truck.
My Governor is an Idiot
Also has what looks close to the California State Seal
Says he turned his life around, well he’s been in prison, the lock up. Every move watched and controlled. It does not tell us how he’d be if he were living in the free world.
This stuff always gets me, ‘they’re different now’.
Sure.
All ‘immigrants’ have the right to go home. Just helping...
#8. In California, if you are a released killer, you are a potential Democrat Party voter. Now Newsome’s paroles and pardons are definitely an impeachable offense of “quid pro quo” re voting in California.
Newsome is insane, but then again, he’s a governor of California where almost all of their governors for the past 50 years have been insane (Reagan not included).
Fortunately (for society) he murdered a rival gang member.
Unfortunately he did not murder an attorney named Anoop Prasad.
