We all know the stories, at least if we live in California or New York, about the California prison guards who retire on six-figure pensions, or the school custodians who for their six-figure salaries, can't be bothered to sweep the floors at New York's run-down public schools.
Turns out those outrages aren't just apocryphal, they are going on now. According to an item in ZeroHedge, via Forbes, citing a new data compilation at OpenTheBooks:
The work of our auditors at OpenTheBooks.com tells a compelling story: Public service is supposed to be about serving the people. However, the good intentions of America’s 19 million public employees come at a very high price for the people – nearly $1 trillion. In many cases, taxpayers generously fund these employee salaries.
Our online database is free to use and includes most employees within the federal, state, and local governments. You can search in your backyard or across the nation. Find out just how much public employees made last year. The salary records include name, salary, position title, and employer for 2017.
The data is full of stunning examples.
Tree trimmers in Chicago lopped off $106,000.
New York City school janitors cleaned off $165,000 while out earning the principals at $135,000.
Lifeguards in Los Angeles County, California, made up to $365,000.
In the small school district in Southlake, Texas (8,000 students), the school superintendent earned $420,000.
You'll work till 80 so they can retire at 50, and you'll pay those monster pensions to boot.

RE: Thats absolutely true. My dad turned 79 this year and is still working 6 days a week running his one-man store
Does he have plans to have someone take over the business eventually? God bless him!
Do not allow so-called public servants to become your masters.
We were all warned about this long ago. Now in states like CA, NY etc, they're economically gang banging the tax payers.
please please move.....reed springs mo. just built a new school. nixa mo and ozark mo. have great school systems....even springfield mo has a good school system
I’m sure I’ll retire soon. I’m eligible this summer, but the longer I hang in there, the better I’ll have it afterward. I didn’t start teaching till I was 38 (I was a Freeper long before I was a teacher) and I had a huge student loan that took 14 years to pay off first. So I’m in the black, finally, but not deep.
SC isn’t either.
.... that military service pays far higher then similar work in the private sector...
Based on my experience, I would have to disagree with that part of your statement.
RE: Does he have plans to have someone take over the business eventually?
As a concept, yes, but he’s not quite ready to step away and fully retire. Perhaps partially to give him some time away from my mom (LOL) and perhaps because they had a real bad run with a rental house that had tenants that wouldn’t pay for a long time and now a huge expense of getting it rehabbed and rentable again.
Considering it can, possibly will, lead to bankrupting cities, states, and the nation it ranks pretty high .
My cousin was a teacher in Ohio near Sandusky, Ohio and had a Masters degree and taught for 38 public and 5 Catholic. She retired two years ago. She said she gets 85% of pay and guaranteed 3% COLA raises for life. She was making 100K when she retired at 65. She works 8-11am M-F at a school teaching reading and makes $35.00 an hour.
Bump, I’ve been trying to take a couple days away from politics but being from NY this infuriates me
Check out how many police and fire department workers work extra overtime their last 2 years which sets the amount of their pension PLUS so many of them get “hurt” during those last 2 years to collect disability compensation on top of their retirement. SCAM.
Until this year, the two largest paychecks the state of West Virginia wrote were for the basketball and football coaches at WVU.
We still have the same basketball coach so I’m pretty sure he’s still top dog. We got a new football coach though, and I’m not sure where he sits in the pecking order.
Thanks
Public service has always been a lie sold to the gullible. As Mencken said about those in government, “These men, in point of fact, are seldom if ever moved by anything rationally describable as public spirit; there is actually no more public spirit among them than among so many burglars or street-walkers. Their purpose, first, last and all the time, is to promote their private advantage, and to that end, and that end alone, they exercise all the vast powers that are in their hands....”
Add 50% to their salaries to account for their pension funding and bennies.
G-D bless you for chosing to work with children ...you earn every cent including your so called hidden pay check ( perks ). worked the LA/LB oil basin chased drilling rigs and production rigs all over southern calfornia. Retired from a major oil company very very early and earn every damn cent just as you will. happy JESUS birthday
Thank you! Yes, I think we earn our keep. Merry Christmas!
Dang! This must be the 900th time you dogged the military...
