The editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, Mark Galli, wrote an editorial calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
In my view, this editorial only serves to confirm one of the sadder realizations of my life: that religious conviction guarantees neither moral clarity nor common sense.
The gist of the editorial -- and of most religious and conservative opposition to President Trump -- is that any good the president has done is dwarfed by his character defects.
This is an amoral view that says more about Galli than it does about the president. He and the people who share his opinion are making the following statement: No matter how much good this president does, it is less important than his character flaws.
Why is this wrong?
First, because it devalues policies that benefit millions of people.
And second, because it is a simplistic view of character.
I do not know how to assess a person's character -- including my own -- outside of how one's actions affect others. Since I agree with almost all of President Trump's actions as president and believe they have positively affected millions of people, I have to conclude that as president, Trump thus far has been a man of particularly good character.
Of course, if you think his policies have harmed millions of people, you will assess his character negatively. But that is not what never-Trump conservatives or Christians such as the Christianity Today editor-in-chief argue. They argue that his policies have indeed helped America (and even the world), but this fact is far less significant than his character.
In the words of Galli: "(I)t's time to call a spade a spade, to say that no matter how many hands we win in this political poker game, we are playing with a stacked deck of gross immorality and ethical incompetence."
This rhetorical sleight of hand reflects poorly on Galli's intellectual and moral honesty.
Galli and every other Christian and conservative opponent of the president believe their concerns are moral, and that the president's Christian and other conservative supporters are political.
This is simply wrong.
I and every other supporter of the president I know support him for moral reasons, not to win a "political poker game." Galli's view is purely self-serving; he's saying, "We Christian and other conservative opponents of the president think in moral terms, while Christian and other conservative supporters of the president think in political terms."
So, permit me to inform Galli and all the other people who consider themselves conservative and/or Christian that our support for the president is entirely moral.
-- To us, putting pressure on the Iranian regime -- one of the most evil and dangerous regimes on Earth -- by getting out of the Iran nuclear deal made by former President Barack Obama is a moral issue. Even New York Times columnist Bret Stephens, who loathes Trump, has written how important the president's rejection of the Obama-Iran agreement has been.
-- To us, enabling millions of black Americans to find work -- resulting in the lowest black unemployment rate ever recorded -- is a moral issue.
-- To us, more Americans than ever being employed and almost 4 million Americans freed from reliance on food stamps is a moral issue.
-- To us, appointing more conservative judges than any president in history -- over the same period of time -- is a moral issue. That whether the courts, including the Supreme Court, are dominated by the left or by conservatives is dismissed by Galli as "political poker" makes one question not only Galli's moral thinking but also his moral theology.
-- To us, moving the American embassy to Israel's capital city, Jerusalem -- something promised by almost every presidential candidate -- is a moral issue, not to mention profoundly courageous. And courage is a moral virtue.
-- To us, increasing the U.S. military budget -- after the severe cuts of the previous eight years -- is a moral issue. As conservatives see it, the American military is the world's greatest guarantor of world peace.
Yet, none of these things matter to Galli and other misguided Christians and conservatives. What matters more to them is Trump's occasional crude language and intemperate tweets, what he said about women in a private conversation and his having committed adultery.
Regarding adultery, that sin is for spouses and God to judge. There is no connection between marital sexual fidelity and moral leadership. I wish there were. And as regards the "Access Hollywood" tape, every religious person, indeed every thinking person, should understand that there is no connection between what people say privately and their ability to be a moral leader. That's why I wrote a column for the Wall Street Journal 20 years ago defending Hillary Clinton when she was charged with having privately expressed anti-Semitic sentiments.
That the editor of Christianity Today thinks the president's personal flaws, whatever they might be, are more important than all the good he has done for conservatives, for Christians, for Jews, for blacks and for America tells us a lot ... about Galli and the decline of Christian moral thought.
HMMMmmm
Dear Sirs:
I understand that a position as pastor is open in your church and I would like to apply for it. I have some qualifications for the work, and this letter is an honest review of my past service in the ministry.
I am almost 60 years of age and have been in the ministry for about 25 years. Ive never lasted very long in any one place, but once I did stay in one church three years. People say my health is not good, but I ignore these kinds of irritants and press on anyway, believing my ill health is actually an advantage to keep my big ego in check.
Im a strong leader and have usually wound up in charge of everything Ive ever done. Ill be frank with you, Im not always popular, and have been expelled from a number of cities where I ministered. But in every case it was because of a trouble-making opposition I seem to get everywhere I go. I just preach the truth and some people get angry when they hear it.
You may hear about the time when I confronted the highest leader in my denomination to his face -- in front of an entire church body. But he was clearly in the wrong and he backed down. It is that simple: I was right, and he was wrong. I spoke the truth, as I always do. And my truth won the day.
I have seldom been able to work full-time in the ministry, so I have usually had employment outside of my ministry to help support me. In some churches I received no salary at all, and occasionally my job even provided for paying the staff too, though that was not the average situation. Don't the idea though that I worked only with large churches. Most of the churches I've worked with were small, and all of them were able to meet in a house or small hall.
I am a good preacher and well-trained in Bible truths though I often preach longer than people think I shouldsometimes for several hours. And you might hear that I have even preached all night at times.
I have had some success at church planting, though some believe my methods are wrong. What I do is enter a new city and find the local religious gathering. I attend there until I get an opportunity to teach or speak, then I show them how their doctrine is wrong and the doctrine I teach is correct. This usually causes a lot of division, and those who side with me generally split off the original group and with that core group I start a new church.
In case you follow up on my references you may discover some questionable events. So I need to give my side on these stories. Yes, it is true that I am guilty of conspiracy to commit murder. But that was before I accepted Christ. And it is true that because of several problems since becoming a Christian, I have been put in jail. But most of these were short stays, though I have just been released from a four-year stint -- two years in Caesarea and the last two here in Rome. But Ive never given up on my faitheven as a convict. Yes, I have been accused as a trouble-maker but these are false accusations, the real trouble-makers are the Jews who keep following me everywhere I go stirring up trouble against me.
Spiritually I have had an incredible journey. Early in my ministry I had "another world" experiencewhich I do not even talk about. I heard inexpressible things. And you need not worry about a charismatic influence, for I am a hard-liner on that issue, always limiting speaking in tongues to a few at a time, and though I speak with tongues myself more than most everybody else, I never do so in public meetings.
I have always worked in a staff ministry, and usually expect a staff as normal. If your church can't pay them, I will figure out a way to have them work directly for me. My staff is generally loyal to me, in fact I demand it. In my first staff relationship, the senior member of the staff quickly recognized that I was more competent than he was, and he stepped down to the associate role so I could assume the leadership of our staff. Later that year the third member of our staff left abruptly walked out, but I thought at that time he was too soft for the ministry anyway. Eventually I lost my associate too when he tried to persuade me to bring that young fellow back on staff. I refused. He left and started another ministry, though we are still friends. I have been used to working with a large staff, but I admit that I've had a lot of staff turnover -- few of them stay very long. That's what multiplication is all about, though isn't it? As to my wife, I do not give any details other than I will be accompanied wherever I go not by her but by a physician, a faithful layman who has been with me for quite a while. He will be moving with me to wherever I go next.
There may be other rumors and accusations about me that you hear when following up my references Strong leaders have strong opposition. So, I wish to address these other rumors and reports directly to you as follows:
I hope you will consider my application.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
His infidelity if it even happened was 14 years ago. The locker room talk is something a LOT of men do and, frankly, he was correct. Some women WILL let you grab them if you are a Billionaire celebrity.
As to his language....he is a New York contractor, thats how they talk. Anyone who has ever been around him says he has a heart of gold and his generosity is well known, so I dont care about words when deeds are so good. These same people found no problem with Clinton getting bl#w jobs in the Oval Office, or about JFKs sexual exploits and prostitutes parading through the White House.
BTW I dont have a lot of respect for any Christian who doesnt believe in redemption
For some people, once they choose to dislike a person, that person can never be redeemed.
So, Trump is a flawed man. We all knew that from the beginning of the campaign.
However, Trump turned out to be a great leader, helping millions with his policies and actions as POTUS. He has kept his word and stood up against the communists trying to tear down conservatism.
I will take the substance of his actions as more important than his past flaws.
He did indeed turn out to be a great leader. The rats know it, but can’t stand it.
Very well said
Hey Paul,. you sound a lot like my old friend Elsie.
Merry Christmas!
“....Trump turned out to be a great leader, helping millions with his policies and actions as POTUS. He has kept his word and stood up against the communists trying to tear down conservatism.
I will take the substance of his actions as more important than his past flaws.....”
Exactly...and therein, lies the truth. As a conservative Christian, I didn’t vote for Trump because he was a” lily white, tip-toe thru the tulips, perfumed individual” like this Galli clown. Yes. He’s a flawed human being just like the rest of us. He puts his pants on one leg at a time...just like the rest of us. I voted for Trump to do a job, a hard, nasty job...and the man has done phenomenally well considered the opposition he’s had from the communists.
To NOT support the POTUS is to condone and support the other side. The other side is an evil, godless, devil-worshipping horde. They worship at the alter of the abortion god, Molech. Perhaps this so-called “Christian” Galli (and I use the term “Christian” here very loosely in this context) should dwell on that thought for awhile...a good, long while. He appears to be nothing but another over-educated idiot. One has to wonder how much did Soros pay this guy to write this?
A sign at a local church summed it up best.
“Don’t hate someone because he sins differently than you”.
Some will if you’ve only a Jackson in your wallet!!
Galli and Christianity Today is controlled by Soros money.
There is nothing more to know about them.
Dont hate someone because he sins differently than you.
Very good... and that is it in a nutshell. But first one must have the personal integrity and introspect to recognize and admit their own hypocrisy and imperfection before judging others. This is very very rare indeed.
“So, Trump is a flawed man. We all knew that from the beginning of the campaign.”
Expressing that sentiment is puzzling. Why state the obvious in a way that insinuates that Trump is more flawed.
Every man that has ever lived, except one, is flawed. And since he has gotten where he is legally and by the numbers, I don’t think he is more flawed. Maybe a bit less than average, since very few men could be investigated to the extent he has been with nothing found.
Trump was speaking euphemistically anyway. He was speaking about how some women will respond by proffering their gonads to power and for the chance for fame, money, and security.
Trump is certainly less flawed than any democrat politician and any never-trump bloviator on the scene today. Much, much less flawed.
Trump was speaking euphemistically anyway. He was speaking about how some women will respond by proffering their gonads to power and for the chance for fame, money, and security.
How self righteous of Galli. I suppose his character has no flaws, and he is pure as the driven snow. Hey Galli, there’s a log in your eye.
I believe God chose Donald Trump for this mission for these times.
